Hilltoppers come from behind to win game two to split series with West Texas A&M

March 25, 2022

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's softball team split their two-game series against West Texas A&M losing game one 8-3 and winning game two 4-3.

Game One: WTAMU 8, SEU 3

The Buffs jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first after an RBI single, and an error allowed them to take a 2-0 lead.

The Buffs stayed on the attack in the second, putting up two more runs. A two-run single allowed WTAMU to take a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second.

After a scoreless third, the Buffs had their biggest offensive push in the fourth, putting up four runs. An RBI double and a three-run home run gave WTAMU an 8-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hilltoppers scored their first runs of the game, putting up two. An RBI single by Megan Morris drove in the Hilltoppers first run, and a sacrifice fly by Alexis Massie drove in the Hilltoppers second run bringing the score to 8-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kathryn Connelly drove in a run on a sacrifice fly bringing the final score to 8-3, giving the Buffs the win in game one.

Game Two: SEU 4, WTAMU 3

After a scoreless first, the Buffs got on the board in the top of the second following an RBI single. An RBI double and RBI single extended WTAMU's lead to 3-0 over the Hilltoppers in the third.

However, the Hilltoppers were just getting started. After two scoreless innings, the Hilltoppers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one. A two-run single by Valerie Brant  got the Hilltoppers on the board and brought the score to 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Megan Morris drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game with two outs. In the following at-bat, Kaylee McQuilllan scored the game-winning run on an error by the Buffs first-baseman.

Renna Toomey pitched in relief and was virtually untouchable in the win. She pitched four innings, giving up just three hits and no runs to quiet the Buffs offense for the rest of the game.

SEU softball is back in action at home Sunday afternoon as they take on Eastern New Mexico in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for noon.
