Hilltoppers drop doubleheader to #10 Rams

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The St. Edwards softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against #10 Angelo State, 10-9 and 10-2. 

 

Game One: ASU 10, SEU 9

 

Game one got off to a slow start, with both teams going hitless in the first two innings. The Hilltoppers scored five runs in the third to take a commanding lead.

 

Genisa Marrero-Carter got things started with an RBI single up the middle. Jordan Neely, Valerie Brant, and Kaylee McQuillan had RBI singles to give SEU a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. 

 

In the bottom of the third, the Rams took their first lead of the game. A single, bases-loaded walk and two errors allowed the Rams to take a 6-5 lead. 

 

After two scoreless innings, the Rams extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth. A two-run homer gave the Rams an 8-5 lead heading into the seventh inning.

 

In the seventh inning, the Hilltoppers scored four runs to retake the lead. Jordan Neely picked up her third RBI on an RBI single into left field. A stolen base and two errors allowed the Hilltoppers to take a 9-8 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. 

 

The Hilltopper comeback would fall short as a walk-off two-run home run gave the Rams the win in game one.

 

Starting pitcher McKenna Leamon pitched two innings giving up two earned runs on two hits while striking out four batters. In relief, Cadie Belle Currie pitched four ? innings allowing six hits and four runs in the loss. 

 

Game Two: ASU 10, SEU 2

 

The Rams scored two runs to take an early 2-0 lead in the first. A hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and a bases-loaded walk allowed the Rams to get on the board early. 

 

After a scoreless second, Jordan Neely tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run triple to center field. Later in the inning, the Rams retook the lead on an RBI single up the middle, and a bases-loaded walk, giving the Rams a 4-2 lead.

 

In the fourth, three RBI singles for the Rams extended their lead to 8-2. 

 

In the fifth and final inning, a two-run single up the middle ended the game with the final score of 10-2.

 

Renna Toomey pitched four ? innings giving up ten hits and ten runs in the loss.

 

SEU is back in action on Sunday as they take on Lubbock Christian in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
