AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's softball team split their two-game series with Texas A&M Commerce winning game one 6-4 but losing game two 9-6.
Game One: SEU 6, TAMUC 4
Game one of the doubleheader got off to a slow start with three scoreless innings. Both starting pitchers sat down batter after batter to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
In the fourth, the Hilltoppers broke the tie putting up six runs on four hits in the inning. Lauren Hoyt drove in the game's first run on an RBI single to right field. Genisa Marrero-Carter drove in two more runs on a single up the middle. Megan Morris followed with an RBI double to left field, and Jordan Neely cleared the bases with a two-run double to bring the score to 6-0.
The Lions wouldn't get their first hit until the top of the sixth, where they put up four runs on three hits. A two-run home run and a two-run single allowed the Lions to pull within two heading into the bottom of the sixth.
McKenna Leamon picked up her fourth win in a row allowing four runs on three hits while striking out five batters in 5 ? innings pitched. Cadie Belle Currie got the game's final five outs as she gave up no runs on one hit.
Game Two: TAMUC 9, SEU 6
After two scoreless innings, the Lions got on the board first on an RBI single to bring the score to 1-0.
In the fourth, the Lions tacked on two more runs to extend their lead to 3-0. A bases-loaded walk and a single allowed the Lions to increase the deficit for the Hilltoppers.
However, in the home half of the fourth, the Hilltoppers scored four runs to take their first lead of the game. Alexis Massie got the scoring started with a two-run homer over the left-field wall. Kaylee McQuillan would later single home a run, and Megan Morris would give the Hilltoppers their first lead on a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing the score to 4-3.
The Lions would tie the game up at 4-4 on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. In the sixth, the Lions broke the tie bringing home four runs to retake the lead. Two home runs and a bunt single allowed the Lions to take an 8-4 lead.
Later in the inning, an RBI double from Jordan Neely and an RBI single from Kathryn Connelly pulled the Hilltoppers within two down 8-6.
A run in the top of the seventh from the Lions made the final score 9-6.
Cadie Belle Currie pitched five innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters. Renna Toomey got the game's final three outs, allowing four runs on three hits in the loss.
The Hilltoppers are back in action at home as they take on UT Tyler in a doubleheader. First pitch on Sunday is set for 1 pm.
