Women's Soccer Dominates Against ENMU

Hilltoppers Earn 26-4 Advantage in Shots Taken

AUSTIN – After winning a physical defensive battle against St. Mary's on Wednesday, the St. Edward's Hilltoppers women's soccer team opened up the throttle offensively for a dominant 3-0 win over the Easter New Mexico University Greyhounds.

St. Edward's bombarded ENMU with six shots and three corner kicks in the first four minutes, putting the Greyhounds back on their heels and never letting up.

The Hilltoppers found the back of the net quickly on a connection between MARYANNE CROWE and SILLE LOENSTRUP a little more than three minutes in.

JESSICA HYDE put the Hilltoppers into prime position, making a throw-in near midfield and receiving it back to make a long run to the deep left corner, pulling the defense with her. Crowe received the ball just outside the box, giving a hesitation-and-go move to her left to create the passing lane to Loenstrup and threading the ball through a window between two defenders.

Loenstrup settled the ball with her right foot going left, meeting it again off one bounce and firing it off the outside of her right foot past the diving keeper and sending it in off the right post for her first collegiate goal.

The Hilltoppers were relentless, using their pace on the outside to win corners throughout the half even as ENMU settled into the contest. St. Edward's put together an 11-2 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes, generating a 7-0 edge in corner kicks, but failed to add to their lead in the remainder of the half.

St. Edward's scored again less than 10 minutes into the second half. The Greyhounds won a free kick off a foul in the ENMU box by KATIE GAY

ENMU keeper Samantha Jeffries triggered the play with the kick towards midfield but ELENA RAMOS BANET was first to the ball, sending it back towards the attacking third off the inside of her left foot. Loenstrup redirected the ball, sending it into open space on the left side and leading Gay into a shot at a full sprint, sending it from left to right with a rocket from just inside the box.

Crowe orchestrated the last goal with her second assist of the afternoon. Crowe received a throw in on the left sideline, made a quick turn and turned on the jets, beating the defense to the left corner and sending a perfect cross to JULIA SPIELMANN, who was able to settle and fire the shot off her right foot before the keeper could react.

St. Edward's dominated possession for 62 percent of the contest, taking a 26-4 advantage in shots taken and 12-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Hilltoppers improve to 6-1-1, including 2-0 in conference play. St. Edward's will host Midwestern State University next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
