DENTON, Texas – The St. Edward's Hilltoppers volleyball team split its weekend road trip with a big win over Texas Woman's University, defeating the Pioneers 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23).
Featuring a fully healthy lineup, the Hilltoppers' attack showed an improved balance in volume and efficiency, putting down 55 kills on a .226 hitting percentage. MAYA SMALLS led three Hilltoppers in double-digit kills with 14 on a .306 hitting percentage. AUDREY QUESNEL and CAROLINE SWAN added 11 each, hitting .261 and .184 respectively.
St. Edward's set the tone with the serve in the first set, posting three aces while Quesnel led the way with five kills on eight attacks to take the set 25-19.
The Hilltoppers pressed their advantage in a barnburner of a second set in which both teams hit over .350. Smalls did most of the damage for St. Edward's, finding seams in the defense for seven kills on 12 attacks with no errors. Setter ESTHER GRUSSING did a fantastic job balancing the attack, finding Swan on the opposite side for four kills on seven attacks, and AJANI HODGES up the middle for three kills on five attacks, totaling 14 assists in a 25-23 win.
Texas Woman's University battled back with a huge third set, getting a combined 13 kills from Luna van Baars and Tori Woods on better than .400 hitting to shred the Hilltopper defense in a 25-15 win.
Both teams exchanged points to start the fourth set until St. Edward's reeled off an 9-2 run to take a 13-6 lead. The Pioneers closed the gap, pulling to within one on a block by Trixie Oche and Lizzy Reed at 24-23, but Smalls ended the game on a kill from Grussing for her fifth of the set. Quesnel added four.
Smalls also led the Hilltoppers with 26 digs, SARAH KONOVODOFF had 27 receptions, and Grussing set the table with 40 assists. Hodges added weight kills on a .412 clip and two block assists.
St. Edward's improves to 4-9 with a 1-1 conference record. The Hilltoppers will host No. 17-ranked West Texas A&M on Friday at 6:00 p.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. home match against Cameron University.
