PORTALES, N.M. – CAITLYN GONZALEZ scored the game-winning goal almost 20 minutes into the match, and the St. Edward's women's soccer team's defense did the rest in a 1-0 victory for the Hilltoppers.
Gonzalez got an early look at the goal with a shot five minutes in, taking a pass on the wing and spinning middle to create space only to have her shot blocked and cleared by the back line of defenders.
Eastern New Mexico's defense tightened up, and the Greyhounds got a shot from Abby Ditzler and a corner kick in the 16th minute and another shot from Jacqueline Garcia in the 19th minute.
The Hilltoppers put the only goal on the scoreboard when
KATIE GAY found Gonzalez open in the middle of the field just outside the box. Gonzalez had time to settle the ball on her first touch, lineup the shot, and then send the ball into the back of the net just past the diving Eastern New Mexico keeper.
Eastern New Mexico threatened with three shots in a minute just under 30 minutes in, but the Hilltoppers got back-to-back saves from goalkeeper
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM.
The Greyhounds put together a 9-5 advantage in shots attempted, but Schlumbohm stopped all three shots on goal.
Eastern New Mexico opened the second half aggressively with a corner kick and three shots early, but the defense held steady, with Schlumbohm picking up another save. Schlumbohm finished with four saves and the shutout.
St. Edward's improves to 4-2-1, including 3-1 in conference play. The Hilltoppers will play at Midwestern State next Saturday at noon.
