WICHITA FALLS, Texas – St. Edward's women's soccer traveled to Midwestern State University and played the Mustangs to a 1-1 draw.
Midwestern State was aggressive in the first half with a 15-2 edge in shots generated and 3-1 in corner kicks. However, St. Edward's keeper
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM, kept the Mustangs off the scoreboard with four saves.
St. Edward's struck early in the second half when
CAITLYN GONZALEZ found
MCKENNA KEELEY in the 46th minute. The Hilltoppers took the second half's opening kick and quickly played the ball deep into Midwestern State territory, earning a free kick from the deep corner.
Gonzalez triggered the play, finding Keeley cutting in front of the net for the quick header and a 1-0 lead.
Midwestern State kept the pressure on with a barrage of shots and three consecutive corner kicks, but the Hilltopper defense kept the ball out of the net until the 73rd minute.
The Mustangs made a long throw-in into the box, and Schlumbohm stopped Lexi Beck's first shot attempt but could not corral the ball, and Allessandra Romano put the rebound into the back of the net.
St. Edward's is now 4-2-2 with a 3-1-1 conference record. The Mustangs are 5-3-3 with a 2-1-1- conference record. The Hilltoppers will travel to Laredo on Wednesday to play Texas A&M International at 7 p.m.
