AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's and Dallas Baptist played to a standstill from start to finish, each scoring a goal late in the contest to finish at a 1-1 draw.
Playing for the second time this season, both teams set the tone with their physicality, combining for 17 fouls in the first half. The Hilltoppers got some stellar defensive work from
TIMMY HOLLENBECK, making his first start, and
IRVIN ABARCA.
The duo covered a lot of space across the pitch and won balls going vertical, quickly getting the ball back into the midfield, where midfielders like
MARTIN TELLEZ,
SHUNJI WATANABE, or
JOMMAR REYES could create opportunities.
Hollenbeck even got two shots off, including an ambitious attempt rocketed from deep outside the box that leaping Dallas Baptist keeper Patrick Banich was able to get his fingertips on to deflect at the last second.
The Hilltoppers created other opportunities in the second half, including two from
JETHRO VOURJOLO, who pressured the Patriots up top and sent one shot off the woodwork.
St. Edward's controlled possession for a good portion of the second half, taking a 5-2 shot advantage for the first 20 minutes after the break before finally breaking through on a goal from
VICENTE ALVAREZ on a feed from
JOMMAR REYES. The Hilltoppers carried the momentum through another attempt from Bartosz Zabek that sailed high and to the right.
A yellow card on
SHUNJI WATANABE in the 86th minute gave DBU a set piece it capitalized on when Ethan Unger found Andrew Hollenbach for the equalizer.
St. Edward's finished the game 0-5-4 with an 0-1-2 conference record. Dallas Baptist is now 4-5-2 with a 1-1-1 conference record. The Hilltoppers will travel to play Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday.
