Women's Soccer Plays UTPB to a 2-2 Draw on Senior Day

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's women's soccer's CAITLYN GONZALEZ celebrated senior day with a pair of assists, helping the Hilltoppers to a 2-2 draw against Texas Permian Basin.

The Hilltoppers opened strong with three shots on goal in the first ten minutes, thanks to brilliant passes from Gonzalez and KATELYN SMITH. However, both went directly into the hands of UTPB keeper Valeria Delgado.

Texas Permian Basin withstood St. Edward's opening flurry and answered with a goal in the 23rd minute off a free kick from near midfield. Kristel Chaves triggered the play, sending a rocket toward the goal that bounced off Hilltopper's keeper, HANNAH SIMPSON, and into the boot of Madi Grace Carriello for the goal to take a 1-0 lead into the half despite St. Edward's 7-2 shot advantage.

The Hilltoppers answered in the second half with an equalizer when Gonzalez cut back hard with the ball to lose her defender and dropped the ball off to ABIGAIL HALL near the edge of the box for the score.

Texas Permian Basin went ahead once more in the 74th minute when St. Edward's was called for a handball just outside the box on the right side, and Chavez went for glory herself, drilling the free kick over St. Edward's three-defender wall and into the upper-right corner of the net.

St. Edward's battled back, and Gonzalez showcased her passing again, dribbling the ball the length of the field through the Falcon defense and hitting TRISTYN CABELLO in stride directly in front of the net to tie the game. The Hilltoppers got two shots on goal from Cabello in the final three minutes, but Delgado stopped both to preserve the tie.

The Hilltoppers are 4-5-3 with a 3-4-2 conference record after the draw. St. Edward's will travel to play West Texas A&M next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
