AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's got stellar performances from its younger players, but the Hilltoppers fell short in a five-set match, losing to the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-11.
Texas A&M-Kingsville hit .357 in the first set, getting four kills on six attacks from Jackie Alanis and three on five attacks from Meghan Stiefer. The Javelinas also combined for four blocks with eight block assists.
St. Edward's fell behind 18-11 in the second set but recovered with a trio of aces from
DELANEY GREGORY and stellar work at the net from
ADDY BADLEY, who posted three kills on four attacks and three block assists to even the match.
Alanis and Ayanna Jackson combined for nine kills on 18 attacks with just one error to lead the Javelinas to a third-set win, hitting .290 as a team.
St. Edward's responded with a strong fourth set, leading from start to finish while hitting a blistering .531 as a team, led by Badley's six kills on seven attacks.
Texas A&M-Kingsville opened the fifth set on a 6-0 run. The Hilltoppers recovered to pull within 10-9, but the Javelinas reeled off a 5-2 run to clinch the match.
Gregory led St. Edward's with 20.5 points, recording 11 kills, seven service aces, and five block assists.
KELLI FORDING contributed 15 kills on a .303 hitting percentage, and Badley added 14 kills on a .426 hitting percentage.
SARAH KONOVODOFF had 15 digs, and
JORDAN CHAPMAN recorded 16 assists.
St. Edward's falls to 7-16 with a 3-8 conference record. The Hilltoppers will travel to play Arkansas Fort Smith next Friday at 6 p.m.
