LUBBOCK, Texas – St. Edward's women's soccer scored two goals and dug in defensively to post a shutout victory to punch its ticket to the Lone Star Conference Tournament with a win over Lubbock Christian on the final day of the regular season.
In a providential for drama bit of scheduling, both teams entered the contest vying for the final spot in the seven-team LSC Tournament with an opportunity to determine the winner on the pitch in a win-or-go-home situation.
"In the face of adversity, our team came together and delivered when it mattered most," St. Edward's Head Women's Soccer Coach Nick Cowell says. "Winning 2-0 in this must-win situation showcases our determination and teamwork. We're proud of the team's accomplishment."
Roughly two weeks ago, on Senior Day, the coaching staff encouraged the team to keep its head up after battling back twice to force a draw against Texas Permian Basin. Against Lubbock Christian, the Hilltoppers showcased that ability to come through with its season on the line.
St. Edward's struck early when
TRISTYN CABELLO stepped in front of a short Lubbock Christian goal kick, getting the ball to the ground quickly and making a decisive move to earn a free kick on a trip by Lady Chaps' defender Casey Storer.
Cabello triggered the free kick from roughly ten yards outside the box, sending the ball over the defensive wall and bending it into the back-left corner of the net for the goal in the fifth minute.
Lubbock Christian got an opportunity in the 27th minute when LSC leading goal scorer Lexi De La Cruz fired a shot on goal only to be turned away by St. Edward's keeper
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM. It was the only shot on goal in five attempts for the Lady Chaps in the first half.
Schlumbohm came through again after the break, stopping a shot each from Abby Kone and De La Cruz in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
ABIGAIL HALL added some insurance in the 78th minute with her second goal of the season. St. Edward's senior
RYANN JERGOVICH made the long throw-in from the sideline into the outskirts of the box, where
AMREY WENNEKER headed it to
ARI RAMIREZ, who made the one-touch pass to Hall. Hall used her first touch to send the ball left, exploding from a standstill into an open shooting window to rocket the ball into the back of the net.
De La Cruz had two more opportunities to put Lubbock Christian on the scoreboard, sending one shot off the woodwork and having another stopped by Schlumbohm. The Hilltoppers' keeper finished with four saves in the shutout.
St. Edward's finished the regular season with a 6-6-3 overall record, including 5-5-2 in conference play. The Hilltoppers clinch the final spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, with the quarterfinals starting Nov. 6.
