St. Edward's Men's Basketball Wraps Up Opening Weekend With Win Over Simon Fraser

Sean Elkinton Scores a Career-High 28 Points

LANGLEY, B.C. – St. Edward's men's basketball wrapped up its weekend at the CCA Division II Canadian Tip-Off Classic with an 86-54 win over host Simon Fraser University.

For a second consecutive day, St. Edward's big man SEAN ELKINTON set a new career-high, leading the Hilltoppers with 28 points on 11-for-18 shooting, scorching the Red Leafs from outside by hitting 3-for-4 from deep and leading a 44-30 Hilltopper advantage in points in the paint.

The Hilltoppers jumped to an early 11-2 lead, getting five early points and a block from JEFF GARY over that run before Elkinton's first layup off a few from BLAKE NIELSEN to cap off an 8-0 run, prompting a Simon Fraser timeout.

St. Edward's quickly extended the lead into double figures before Simon Fraser's bench helped the Red Leafs pull back within four at 19-15 with 8:32 remaining in the first half. Tate Christiansen and Irish Coquia combined for 11 of the Red Leafs' 13 bench points.

The Hilltoppers quickly extended the lead back into double figures, leaning on a defense that forced 15 turnovers, including six steals, with Nielsen leading the way with three in the half to go with four points and four assists.

St. Edward's limited Simon Fraser to 9-for-25 shooting, including 3-for-13 from deep, and only two free-throw attempts. The Hilltoppers owned a 16-5 advantage in points from turnovers and a 12-6 edge in second-chance points on six offensive rebounds. Elkinton had a game-high 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting, followed by Gary's eight points on four shots for a 37-22 Hilltopper lead at the break.

The Hilltoppers kept the pressure on, extending the lead to 30 less than 10 minutes into the second half and keeping it at that margin the rest of the way.

Elkinton was once again too much for Simon Fraser, scoring 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting in the second half, hitting both 3-point attempts. The Hilltoppers also got good minutes from backup big JAMISON KAY, scoring eight of his 10 points in the second half.

GAVINO RAMOS and Gary scored 11 points each, and St. Edward's starting backcourt combined for seven rebounds, five steals, and six assists. Nielsen filled the box score with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Christiansen was the lone Red Leaf in double figures with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting.

St. Edward's wraps up its opening weekend with a 2-1 record. The Hilltoppers will return home and host the Lone Star Conference/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Challenge next weekend, starting with a game against Colorado Christian on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
