Men's Basketball Loses To Cameron

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's started slow offensively in the first half and couldn't get enough stops in the second half of a 90-76 loss to the Cameron Aggies.

St. Edward's struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 7-for-19 (36.8 percent) inside the 3-point line with only 12 points in the paint; the lack of rim pressure translated to tougher shots from outside, where St. Edward's connected on only 5-of-16 (31.3 percent).

Cameron cleaned up the defensive glass, outrebounding St. Edward's 22-15 before the break. The Aggies converted defensive stops into quick offense opportunities, getting downhill after misses to outscore the Hilltoppers 9-0 in fastbreak points.

Jaylan Thomas led Cameron with 15 points, catching fire from deep, hitting 4-for-6 from the field and 5-for-7 overall. BLAKE NIELSEN led the Hilltoppers with nine points at the break with an efficient 4-for-7 shooting, including 1-for-2 from behind the 3-point line. GAVINO RAMOS added seven points with a pair of 3-pointers.

St. Edward's shooting woes turned into a 15-0 Cameron run late in the first half, getting a combined 11 points from Thomas and Miles Gurske over that stretch, hitting 3-for-5 from deep and 5-for-7 from the field.

The Hilltoppers found a rhythm in the second half, hitting ten of their first 14 shots. Ramos led the charge with ten points through the first ten minutes after the break. The third-year guard opened the second half with a 3-pointer, a pass to SEAN ELKINTON for a layup, a layup and foul for a 3-point play, two free throws, and a floater.

Cameron's Lavell Brodnex kept St. Edward's at bay with 11 of the team's 21 points over that stretch, and the Aggies continued their scorching shooting by hitting seven of their first 13 shots, including three 3-pointers.

St. Edward's offense started to look like itself late in the second, getting a screen and rescreen pick and roll assist from Nielsen to Elkinton, followed by back-to-back 3-pointers where the ball moved one step ahead of defensive rotations. However, the Hilltoppers couldn't string together enough stops to make a meaningful dent in the deficit.

Ramos led St. Edward's with 24 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Elkinton, Nielsen, and JAYDEN JOHNSTON added 11 each. Elkinton also contributed eight rebounds.

Thomas and Brodnex scored 22 points each for Cameron, who shot 35-for-63 from the field, including 10-for-23 from deep.

St. Edward's drops to 8-4 with a 2-2 conference record. The Hilltoppers will play Arlington Baptist on a neutral site at Concordia on Friday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m.
