Women's Basketball Scores Season-High in Win Over Southwestern

AUSTIN, Texas – CELISE BOBBITT led four Hilltoppers in double figures, and the St. Edward's women's basketball team had its most efficient offensive performance in an 81-54 victory over the Southwestern University Pirates. 
 
Bobbitt scored a season-high 15 points in just under 18 minutes, working inside for quick dump-offs, converting defense into offense with a steal and quick layup, and even extending her range for her first 3-pointer of the season. The junior forward hit 4-for-5 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. 
 
Southwestern sophomore guard Aniyah Burke kept the Pirates in the game early, scoring nine points on three 3-pointers in the first quarter. St. Edward's talented first-years BAILEY FEATHERSTONE and JANIAH PERKINS responded with a combined 12 points, each hitting a 3-pointer and calmly getting to their spots for quality looks. 
 
Burke hit her third 3-pointer to pull Southwestern within 18-17 with 54 seconds remaining in the first quarter, but St. Edward's got back-to-back jumpers, including a 3-pointer from Featherstone in the final seconds for the 23-17 lead. 
 
St. Edward's extended its lead with solid production from its frontcourt in the second quarter, getting five points and four rebounds from AINSLEY THUNELL and six points from Bobbitt, getting to the free-throw line for four makes in five attempts. 
 
The Hilltoppers blew the game open with a 12-0 run late in the first half sparked by a LAUREN CATHERMAN steal and layup in transition. JAYDA RUFFUS-MILNER scored four points, RONNIE CANTU chipped in a 3-pointer, and Thunell capped the run off with a 3-point play for the 43-22 lead with 1:27 remaining in the half.
 
Featherstone led St. Edward's with nine points at the break, and Ruffus-Milner and Bobbitt added eight each. The Hilltoppers shot 50 percent from the field, including 3-for-6 from deep, taking a 45-24 lead. 
 
Perkins and Catherman scored St. Edward's first 11 points of the second half, and the bench did the rest in the third quarter, getting five points from Cantu and a 3-pointer each from Bobbitt and MIKAH CHAPMAN for the 67-38 lead heading into the fourth. 
 
St. Edward's emptied its bench in the fourth, and Burke scored nine of her game-high 29 points for Southwestern, who won the quarter 16-14. 
 
Perkins finished with 11 points, Thunell had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Cantu logged 10 points on 3-for-3 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from deep and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Ruffus-Milner had a solid all-around game with eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. 
 
St. Edward's improves to 3-4 with the win. The Hilltoppers will host Midwestern State on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
