Baseball Overpowers Cameron

Hilltoppers Sweep Doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas – DAVIS DREWEK lit the candles for his birthday celebration in Game 1, and starting pitcher LUKE SHORT blew away the Cameron Aggies in Game 2 to lead the St. Edward's baseball team to a doubleheader sweep.

Game 1: St. Edward's 18, Cameron 7
After St. Edward's struggled to generate runs on Friday afternoon, Drewek woke the Hilltoppers' bats in the bottom of the first inning, driving an 0-2 fastball deep into right-center for a three-run blast. The Hilltoppers' first hit of the day sparked a power surge in an 18-7 win.

Davis was brilliant in the first game, hitting 3-for-4 with a pair of three-run home runs to drive in six RBIs and score three runs.

St. Edward's made some lineup changes to generate more offense, moving JOSH GRAHAM into the eighth spot at second base. The offense-for-defense tradeoff showed both sides of the coin early but titled decidedly in the Hilltoppers' favor.

Graham committed an early error in the top of the first on what should've been a double-play opportunity, leading to one unearned run. A Hunter Smith sacrifice fly to deep center scored another run for the 2-0 lead.

After Cameron retook the lead in the top of the second, Graham more than made up for his at the plate, driving in HUNTER CONNER with a shallow line drive to center field. Graham finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The lineup move worked on the margins, but it hardly mattered for a St. Edward's team that overpowered its opponent.

Later in the inning, CONNOR COX lifted a first-pitch fastball deep to right field, clearing the outfield net set up to protect the houses across the street from the field, sending the ball into the adjacent neighborhood for a two-run blast.

CULLEN AINSWORTH followed with a two-run home run on a frozen rope that cleared the left-field fence.

Cox cleared the right-field fence again in the third inning, hitting the ball just as hard but not as high, delivering into the safety net for a three-run home run.

Ainsworth, Cox, and Drewek each had three hits and two home runs, tying for the second-most team home runs in a game in program history. Several other Hilltoppers sent balls to the fence or near the warning track, finishing with 16 hits and a season-high team .457 batting average.

JACK GRANACK had a workman-like performance on the mound for St. Edward's, surrendering seven runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and a walk for the win. AUSTIN ESSEX relieved him to start the sixth and walked the first two hitters he faced before striking out three of the next five hitters in two scoreless innings.

Game 2: St. Edward's 8, Cameron 2

LUKE SHORT started slow on the mound, surrendering a run in the first and second innings, but settled into a dominant performance in the complete-game victory.

Short received plenty of run support in the first inning, scoring on a wild pitch and a three-run home run to center field by Ainsworth. The Hilltopper offense only had five hits, making them all count with eight runs.

In the third, LUKE JOHNSON joined the home run party with a two-run opposite field home run to score Davis. Cox nearly hit his third home run of the day in the fourth when he drove a ball off the center field wall, scoring TREVOR SEBEK before being thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple. Drewek scored the eighth run on a wild pitch.

Short locked in during the third inning, retiring the next 15 hitters in order, finishing with 12 strikeouts, no walks, and only four hits surrendered. It was the second time in five appearances Short reached 12 strikeouts, bringing his record to 4-0.

St. Edward's improves to 11-5 with a 9-5 conference record. The Hilltoppers will close out their series against Cameron tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
