SAN ANGELO, Texas – JERZIE PELHAM and MEGAN MORRIS went yard on Angelo State's field, belting solo blasts in the fourth and fifth innings to lead St. Edward's softball to a 2-1 win to open the week's three-game series.
Cheyenne Floyd (L, 6-5) started in the pitcher's circle for Angelo State and kept St. Edward's batters off balance for the most part, limiting the Hilltoppers to five hits with nine strikeouts.
ALEXIS MASSIE delivered a leadoff single in the second, and ARIANNA VIDALES doubled to center in the third, but both were left stranded, with Floyd striking out two in a row to lead Vidales on second.
Pelham made her lone hit of the day count with a leadoff homer in the fourth, pulling a 1-0 fastball over the bleachers behind the left-field fence for her third home run of the season to give St. Edward's a 1-0 lead.
Angelo State tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a two-out RBI single up the middle from Keilei Garcia, scoring Ashton McMillan from second.
Morris responded in the fifth with another leadoff blast from the Hilltoppers, pulling a 3-1 pitch down the left-field line for her first collegiate home run.
That was enough for starting pitcher CADIE BELLE CURRIE (W, 12-5) and a stingy Hilltopper defense that held Angelo State scoreless the rest of the way, retiring the side in order in the seventh.
Currie went all seven innings, striking out two while surrendering five hits, three walks, and one run in the win. Pelham, Morris, Massie, Vidales, and JORDAN NEELY each had one hit for St. Edward's. Bailey Martinez hit 2-for-2 for Angelo State, Garica went 2-for-3, and Maleya Burns had one hit.
St. Edward's improves to 22-15 with a 16-12 conference record. Angelo State drops to 24-18 with a 16-15 conference record. Both teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
