AUSTIN, Texas – BENNETT MOHN continues to torch the nets early, and St. Edward's men's basketball held on late to defeat the UT Tyler Patriots 67-61.
St. Edward's opened sluggishly, surrendering a 12-5 run to start the game. Nikolas Gustavson sparked UT Tyler with six points over the first four minutes, and the Hilltoppers shot 2-for-6 with two turnovers over that stretch.
GAVINO RAMOS sparked an 11-0 run with his playmaking, finding
BLAKE NIELSEN for a 3-pointer and then
SEAN ELKINTON for a layup, followed by a Ramos free throw.
JAMISON KAY and
ALEU ALEU provided energy off the bench, with Aleu finding Kay for a 3-pointer and hitting a pair of free throws for a 16-12 lead.
St. Edward's closed the half on a 17-7 run led by Mohn's eight points over the final six minutes, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and cutting for a backdoor layup off a feed from Nielsen. Ramos closed the half with two free throws to take a 32-21 lead into the break.
Mohn led the Hilltoppers with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep. Elkinton and Nielsen added seven each, and Ramos contributed five of St. Edward's ten assists in a half St. Edward's shot 11-for-28.
After being held scoreless in the first half, UT Tyler's Bryce Roberts erupted for 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting in the second.
Roberts eschewed the isolations and wild pull-up jumpers in the first half for a healthier diet of drives, off-ball movement, and some spot-up shooting to put St. Edward's on its heels.
The Hilltoppers struggled from the field but got great production from its bench, led by Aleu's ten second-half points, hitting two 3-pointers, an offensive putback, and a pair of free throws.
Ramos stayed steady and helped keep UT Tyler at bay with eight second-half points, including six free throws. The Hilltoppers closed the game with a 13-for-16 shooting performance from the free-throw line in the second half.
Mohn led four starters in double figures with 14 points. Nielsen added 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals, Elkinton had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Ramos finished with 11 points and seven assists. Gustavson and Terrell Wilson joined Roberts in double figures with 15 and 10 points each.
St. Edward's improves to 12-4 with a 5-2 conference record heading into Saturday's contest against No. 6 Dallas Baptist.
