SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State closed the game on a 9-0 run in the final minutes to overtake St. Edward's men's basketball in the final three minutes to rally for the 69-64 win over the Hilltoppers.
SEAN ELKINTON led St. Edward's with 23 points and nine rebounds, hitting 8-for-17 from the field, including 3-for-6 from deep, with nine rebounds. Angelo State's Keyshawn Embery-Simpson answered with 19 points, leading three Rams in double figures.
Angelo State scorched the nets for 59.3 percent shooting (16-for-27) in the first half, Led by Kevon Godwin's nine points, with Embery-Simpson and Sehmar Smith scoring eight each. The trio combined for 11-for-20 shooting before the break.
Elkinton kept the Hilltoppers afloat with 14 points and seven rebounds in the half, while the Hilltoppers struggled from the field, shooting 11-for-36 overall to trail 38-29 at the break.
JAYDEN JOHNSTON sparked the Hilltoppers with nine points in the second half, hitting 3-for-4 from deep, and St. Edward's reeled off a 10-0 run to take a 57-52 lead with 7:18 remaining. The Hilltoppers moved the ball with a balanced attack, assisting on nine of their 13 made field goals while cracking down on defense.
However, Embery-Simpson was too much down the stretch, scoring 11 second-half points to lead Angelo State to the win.
BLAKE NIELSEN added 10 points as the only other Hilltopper in double figures. Johnston and
ALEU ALEU combined for 17 points.
St. Edward's drops to 14-7 with a 7-5 conference record after the loss. The Hilltoppers will return home to host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
