Garcia, Schlumbohm Deliver Win For Women's Soccer Over Midwestern State

AUSTIN, Texas – ALYSSA GARCIA delivered the game-winning goal in the 79th minute, and DARIA SCHLUMBOHM recorded eight saves to propel St. Edward's women's soccer to a 1-0 win over the Midwestern State University Mustangs.

St. Edward's controlled possession for the first eight minutes of the game, moving the ball between MARIE HANNEDOUCHE, ISABELLA RUIZ, and ANNIE ROCHA. The latter tested MSU keeper Allison Dellis in the first two minutes, going top left to force the leaping save.

Midwestern State pressured the Hilltoppers over the second ten minutes of the contest. Cassidy Savoy went top right in the 12th minute, and Madison Brinkley went lower left in the 17th minute. Schlumbohm stopped both.

Rocha continued firing off dangerous shots, going bottom right in the 19th minute and a dead-center shot later in the first half on a thread-the-needle through ball from ELENA RAMOS BANET. St. Edward's held a 7-5 advantage in shots, purring four on goal before the break in a scoreless first half.

She picked up where she left off in the second half with a shot that sailed right in the first two minutes after the break.

Brinkley put two on goal in the 58th minute, sending Schlumbohm to the ground for a pair of saves. After CARINA WUST sent a shot high in the 62nd minute, Jimena Rodriguez and Sloana Sullivan fired two shots over two minutes.

Both defenses held serve, with the keepers cleaning up anything that broke through until the 79th minute out of a corner kick. The initial ball sailed past the scrum in front of the net and settled at the foot of SIERRA PADILLA, who went top-left with a rocket.

Dellis got her fingertips on the ball with a leaping save but deflected it off the bottom of the crosspost, sending it straight down into Garcia's path in front of an empty net for the game-winner.

Midwestern State fired three shots over the final eight minutes, with the final desperate attempt sailing high over the goal in the closing seconds. Rocha had a team-high six shots, putting four on goal. Garcia scored on her only attempt.

St. Edward's improves to 4-6-2 with a 2-4-1 conference record. The Hilltoppers will host Texas A&M International on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 4:00 p.m.
