Annie Rocha Scores Two Goals, Women's Soccer Shuts Out TAMIU

AUSTIN, Texas – ANNIE ROCHA scored two goals in the first half, DARIA SCHLUMBOHM and the Hilltopper defense earned their fifth shutout of the season, and the St. Edward's women's soccer team defeated Texas A&M International 2-0.

St. Edward's opened its attack early, getting a corner kick and shot from Rocha in the first minute. Both teams exchanged fouls and kept the ball through the midfield over the next eight minutes with no shots from either team.

MADISON CRESWELL and KATIE FITZPATRICK connected on a nice give-and-go just outside the box that Texas A&M International disrupted. Still, Fitzpatrick sprinted back into the play, catching Gabriela Mendez-Ortiz from behind, taking the ball, then making a spectacular stepover move before putting a shot off the top woodwork at the 9:46 mark.

A minute later, Rocha connected on her first goal of the day. St. Edward's claimed possession of the ball in its defensive third. BAILEY WILLIAMS pushed the ball ahead to ALYSSA GARCIA, who quickly tapped the ball backward to TRISTYN CABELLO near midfield to create the angle for a perfectly weighted through ball to Rocha down the left side of the box. Rocha made a quick cutback with her first touch to lose the defender, then fired in the goal between the keeper's outstretched hands just shy of the 11-minute mark.

Texas A&M International got its first shot in the 15th minute out of a set piece out of a free kick on a Hilltopper foul. Candela Gonzalez went bottom center, and Schlumbohm snuffed it out easily for the save. The Hilltoppers quickly went on the counter on Schlumbohm's punt, getting the ball to Rocha, who missed high. A minute later, she got the ball on the left flank, lost her defender with a spin, and missed high again.

Rocha broke through again in the 20th minute. The play started with the Dustdevils breaking up a cross from Rocha into the box. Texas A&M International cleared the ball, sending it back to the foot of MARIE HANNEDOUCHE in space just past midfield. Hannedouche settled it and sent the ball diagonally from right to left, hitting a running Rocha in perfect stride, delivering the one-touch goal before the ball hit the ground.

Cabello, Creswell, and CARINA WUST each put a shot on goal over the final 20 minutes of a dominant first half for St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers outshot Texas A&M International 10-2, putting six on goal.

St. Edward's defense held serve the rest of the way, and ISABELLA RUIZ, Rocha, and Cabello each got a shot off after the break, and Schlumbohm picked up a pair of saves to close the game out.

Rocha's two goals put her in double digits for the season, tying the conference lead with 10. St. Edward's improves to 5-6-2 with a 3-4-1 conference record. The Hilltoppers will travel this weekend to play Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
