AUSTIN, Texas—St. Edward's women's soccer team's four-game consecutive shutout win ended against nationally-ranked Dallas Baptist University, falling 3-1 to the Patriots.
Dallas Baptist struck early, getting two shots on goal in the first six minutes of play and scoring the second. Angeline Olmos got the ball on the right side of the box, turned inside into the middle of the defense, and then dropped it off for Kaleigh Naizer, who immediately found Taylor Tufts for the score just shy of the sixth minute.
St. Edward's responded with three shots over the next two minutes.
ANNIE ROCHA and
TRISTYN CABELLO each tested DBU keeper Breanna Bown to no avail, and Rocha missed wide left.
The two teams played on near equal footing over the next 17 minutes until either indecision or miscommunication cost the Hilltoppers. Parker Coe received the ball just past the center circle on a throw-in on the left side and played the ball into the box between two Hilltopper defenders and goalie
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM. A moment's indecision allowed Naizer to sprint between the three and score in the 23rd minute.
Dallas Baptist added a third goal in the 35th minute when Elise Borders played a long pass into the box and founder Haley Roberson for a header into the back of the net. The Patriots ended the first half with a 12-8 shots advantage and a 3-0 lead.
St. Edward's broke through for a goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Three Dallas Baptist converged on Rocha in the box, forcing the ball back to
MARIE HANNEDOUCHE, who quickly sent the ball diagonally through the defense, with Alyssa Garica running through as a decoy.
CARINA WUST got the ball in open space on the left for the easy goal.
The Hilltoppers got another look in the 53rd minute, but
KATIE FITZPATRICK missed high on St. Edward's last shot of the game.
Dallas Baptist finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots taken, putting eight on goal. St. Edward's put four on goal. The Hilltoppers fall to 6-7-2 with a 4-5-1 conference record and will travel to Texas Permian Basin on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
