The Lone Star Conference announced its 2024 Men's Soccer Postseason Honors, awarding St. Edward's head men's soccer coach Brian Young as its Coach of the Year and forward
ARTHUR SOUZA as the Academic Player of the Year.
Young guided the Hilltoppers to a stunning turnaround in the program's second year back, improving on last year's one-win finish to clinch the third seed in the Lone Star Conference, then advancing to Friday night's semifinal game against second-seed Midwestern State. This award is Young's first LSC Coach of the Year. He won the award six times in the Heartland Conference in the program's previous iteration.
Souza has a 4.0 grade-point average while pursuing his master's degree in business administration. He finished the season second in the conference in goals scored with eight, including three game-winners, and also headlined the program's all-conference honorees with a first-team selection.
Defender
IRVIN ABARCA and midfielder
SHUNJI WATANABE earned All-LSC Second Team honors. Abarca is second on the team in minutes played with 1,452 and anchors the conference's second-stingiest defense, recording six shutouts. He scored a goal and four assists for six points and was the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 9.
Watanabe was third on the team in points with eight, scoring three goals and recording two assists in 17 starts for St. Edward's, finishing third in minutes played.
PABLO ZAVALA earned All-LSC Third Team and All-Freshman honors. He finished third on the team in minutes played, helped anchor the defense, and scored a goal and assist.
CHRISTIAN MEZAS and
IZAIAH GARZA join him on the All-Freshman Team. Mezas finished second in the conference with six assists and scored four goals for 14 points. Garza recorded 14 starts, played 928 minutes, and recorded an assist and six shots on goal.
