LANGLEY, B.C., CANADA – St. Edward's women's basketball wrapped up its weekend in Canada, showing glimpses of what it could be and the work still needed in back-to-back games against nationally-ranked opponents.
J.P. scored 17 points and dished out five assists, keeping St. Edward's competitive against No. 11 Gannon until a rough third quarter cost the Hilltoppers a 72-60 loss.
MIKAH CHAPMAN opened the game with a short jumper off an assist from
RAMSEY ROBLEDO, but the Gannon answered with a 7-0 run.
KIANA BENNETT found Robledo for a layup, and
AINSLEY THUNELL answered one made free-throw with a 3-point play on a layup and foul.
Gannon got a spark from Carissa Dunham off the bench with a pair of 3-pointers, taking an 18-15 lead at the end of the first.
St. Edward's got into the paint repeatedly in the second quarter, getting five points from J.P., with
ISABEL LANGENBERG and
JASMYN JACKSON combining for eight points. The Hilltoppers stifled Gannon from the field, holding them to 2-for-12 shooting, but surrendered eight free throws on 11 attempts, taking only a 32-30 lead into the break.
Jackson led St. Edward's with six points in a balanced attack, with eight different Hilltoppers scoring. Dunham led Gannon with 10 points.
Gannon moved the ball better in the third quarter, assisting on seven of its nine made field goals, and the Hilltoppers went cold from the field, shooting 2-for-10, falling behind by 14 before
BAILEY FEATHERSTONE hit a jumper on the Hilltoppers' final possession of the third.
St. Edward's showed its resilience in the fourth. J.P. took over for a stretch, ripping Maibach and taking the ball the other way for a layup. After Featherstone hit a jumper, J.P. found Thunell for a layup.
RILEY MOORE entered the game for J.P. for a short rest and immediately scored a layup to bring the Hilltoppers back within nine.
After back-to-back buckets from Gannon, J.P. reentered the game and found Robledo for a 3-pointer, drove for a layup a few possessions later, and added another layup off a pass from Thunell to bring St. Edward's within six with 2:26 remaining.
Claxton stopped St. Edward's run with a 3-pointer, and after J.P. hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, Gannon closed the game on an 8-4 run to escape with the win.
Featherstone scored nine off the bench, and Thunell and Bennett had seven. Claxton led Gannon with 22 points, hitting 3-for-4 from deep.
St. Edward's will return home to host the South Central Regional Crossover next weekend, playing Regis and Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Saturday.
