Women's Soccer Closes Regular Season With Shutout Win Over Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – CARINA WUST scored two goals, and St. Edward's women's soccer shut out Sul Ross State to close its regular season with its ninth shutout to clinch a winning record and keep its postseason hopes alive.

St. Edward's put pressure out front early, getting Sul Ross State back on its heels. KATIE FITZPATRICK headed a loose ball to ALYSSA GARCIA, whose shot was stopped by Sul Ross State keeper Celeste De La Rosa with a diving save. However, Wust was in the box to clean up the rebound for the game's first goal a little over a minute in.

The Hilltoppers kept the pressure on with back-to-back shots on goal from ANNIE ROCHA, missed shots from ELENA RAMOS BANET and TRISTYN CABELLO, and another shot on goal from Wust stopped by De La Rosa.

Wust broke through again in the 25th minute on an assist from Cabello. Ramos Banet quickly passed to Cabello on the left side, and the latter played a one-touch pass into the box. Wust perfectly timed her run from the right sideline, stepping inside the defender at the last second for an open look into the net.

St. Edward's put 16 shots up in the first half, including nine on goal, with a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks to lead by two at the break.

MARIE HANNEDOUCHE scored her first goal of the season from 35 yards out on a free kick. Sul Ross State sent three defenders up on the wall, but Hannedouche sent a bending shot that powered past the diving goalkeeper's fingertips and into the back of the net.

CLAIRE SMITH added the fourth goal in the 73rd minute when her cross from the left corner hit the far woodwork and ricocheted into the back of the net.

St. Edward's ends its regular season with a 9-7-2 record, including 7-5-1 in conference play. The Hilltoppers will await the final results from the rest of the Lone Star Conference regular-season finales to determine whether they see postseason play.
