LAKEWOOD, Colo. – MASON COURTNEY torched the nets and the Colorado Mesa Mavericks with a career-high 23 points to lead a St. Edward's men's basketball 3-point barrage for a 94-65 win to open the South Central Region Crossover.
St. Edward's buried Colorado Mesa from beyond the 3-point line, hitting 19-for-35 (52.2 percent) to outscore the Mavericks 57-24 from deep. The 19 made 3-pointers are the second most in a game in program history.
The Hilltoppers opened the game with a double-big lineup, starting
LEWIS ROWE in the middle next to
JAMISON KAY. The duo showed off their playmaking from the frontcourt, with Kay finding
GAVINO RAMOS and Rowe assisting Mason on back-to-back 3-pointers to set the tone.
St. Edward's swarmed Colorado Mesa with its fullcourt press, forcing turnovers and turning them into more 3-pointers for a 20-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
Mason led the charge with 14 points and a pair of assists. Ramos contributed 12 first-half points on four 3-pointers and four assists, finding Mason for a 3-pointer,
JAKE DEFRANZA for two more, and Kay for a layup inside to lead the Hilltoppers to a 49-31 lead at the break.
St. Edward's continued its momentum into the second half, building its lead up to as high as 31 points even as it cleared its bench.
Courtney finished with 23 points, six rebounds, and three assists, shooting 9-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-5 from behind the 3-point line. Ramos added 21 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals, shooting 5-for-10 from deep.
CONOR MCMANUS scored 14 points on eight shots, and
SAM MCKINNEY anchored the second unit with 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting.
Mason Honeyman led four Colorado Mesa players in double figures with 15 points but shot 4-for-12 from the field.
St. Edward's assisted on 22 of its 34 made field goals with only seven turnovers. The Hilltoppers recorded seven steals and forced 18 turnovers. St. Edward's will play host Colorado Christian tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
