AUSTIN, Texas – Six Hilltoppers scored in double figures, and St. Edward's women's basketball blew the game open with a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter to defeat the Sul Ross State Lobos 84-65, scoring a season-high.
KIANA BENNETT set the tone with a corner 3-pointer to open the game, followed immediately by a steal and hit-ahead pass to
MIKAH CHAPMAN on the break.
St. Edward's was efficient from the field with a 9-for-16 opening quarter, led by Bennett's eight points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting and a solid all-around floor game from
AINSLEY THUNELL in the middle. Thunell gave St. Edward's its first extended lead with a steal and back-to-back layups as part of a 6-0 run started by Bennett's driving floater.
Thunell jumped an entry pass attempted from the top of the key into the post, following the break for an offensive rebound and putback, then sealed off her defender on the next possession for a layup.
Sul Ross State point guard TaMaiya Mims gave the Lobos a foothold on offense with six first-quarter points. That foothold allowed Sul Ross State to set its pressing, trapping defense to slow St. Edward's offense by forcing six turnovers, including five steals.
ISABEL LANGENBERG hit a 3-pointer early in the second quarter, but Sult Ross State reeled off a 15-6 run behind six points from Mims. The Lobos shot 7-for-11 from the field over four minutes, taking the lead when a Lobo poked J.P. in the eye in the backcourt, took the ball, and scored to go up 32-31 on Victoria Aguayo's layup.
Thunell steadied the Hilltoppers down the stretch, scoring on a feed from
JASMYN JACKSON, then off a press break with a spinning layup for a J.P. assist. J.P. scored on another twisting drive, Langenberg added another layup, and Robledo hit two free throws to close the final two minutes on a 10-4 run and a 41-36 halftime lead.
Mims led all scorers with 14 points and four assists at the break. Bennett and Thunnell led the Hilltoppers with eight points each, and Langenberg added seven off the bench.
Much of the first half was a race between the Lobos' ability to create turnovers at the expense of the open shots its defense ceded when the Hilltoppers moved the ball beyond the first line of pressure. St. Edward's tilted that equation heavily in its favor in the third, assisting on five of its seven made field goals to just two turnovers and a 5-for-6 quarter at the free-throw line.
St. Edward's spread the ball beautifully, leaving Sul Ross State playing a futile game of whack-a-mole, rotating to one threat only for another to pop up. Six different Hilltoppers scored in a 20-12 third quarter, led by
RAMSEY ROBLEDO's five points to lead 61-48 going into the fourth.
Sul Ross spent the third quarter plugging leaks in its defense, and St. Edward's finally punched a hole below the waterline in the fourth, sinking the Lobos' ship with a 13-0 run in the middle of the quarter.
St. Edward's shot 4-for-7 over a three-minute, 45-second stretch, and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Jasmin Farmer scored four over that stretch, Bennett hit another 3-pointer, and J.P., Chapman, and Robledo scored two each to go up 81-57.
Mims led all scorers with 21 points and seven assists. All five Hilltopper starters scored in double figures, led by Robledo's 16 points on 4-for-7 shooting. J.P. played a brilliant all-around game with 12 points on six shots, eight assists, seven rebounds, and four steals. Bennett and Thunell scored 11 each, with the latter also grabbing nine rebounds and three steals. Chapman scored 10, and Langenberg added 10 off the bench.
St. Edward's improves to 4-6 with a 1-1 conference record. The Hilltoppers will host Western New Mexico on Saturday.
