Softball Wraps Up Opening Weekend

CONROE, Texas – St. Edward's softball team made a splash to open the Division II First Pitch Invitational with an upset of No. 20 Rogers State; however, a Hilltoppers team down two returning starters couldn't carry the momentum through the rest of the weekend.

Regis 6, St. Edward's 1

After a defensive duel through five innings, Regis broke through with five runs in the sixth to defeat St. Edward's 6-1.

A day after throwing a career-high 12 strikeouts, CADIE BELLE CURRIE was dominant through the first few innings, retiring nine of the first 11 hitters she faced with seven strikeouts through four innings.

AUDRI CASTILLO sparked St. Edward's with a leadoff triple in the third, scoring on an ALEA DESERRANO single to right field for the 1-0 lead.

Currie allowed two runners on in the fourth, surrendering a two-out single and hitting Abby Larsen before ending the inning by striking out Sienna Reed.

Regis tied the game in the fifth, opening with a leadoff double from Barriga, then a two-out RBI single through the left side by Miia Campos.

The Rangers strung together four hits and five runs in the sixth, capped off by back-to-back two RBI at-bats from Olivia Wick and Campos on a double and triple.

St. Martin's 7, St. Edward's 2

St. Martin's opened with five runs on six hits in the first to defeat St. Edward's 7-2 in the late game on Saturday night.

Seven consecutive St. Martin's hitters reached in the top of the first with six singles and a walk for the early 5-0 lead. St. Edward's starting pitcher KYLEN PADGETT settled down with three scoreless innings after that, but ended with five earned runs and 12 hits surrendered with four strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Seven different Hilltoppers had one hit, but St. Edward's left seven stranded, scoring two in the final inning on a two-RBI triple by MEGAN MORRIS

Pittsburg State 9, St. Edward's 1

Pittsburg State scored in all five innings, including two runs in each of the first and second, and three in the fifth, for the 9-1 win.

The top of the Pittsburg lineup did most of the damage with Heather Arnett and Hannah Burnett combining to hit 5-for-7 with five runs scored and three RBIs. St. Edward's ARIANNA VIDALES, LISETTE URQUIDEZ, JERZIE PELHAM, and HAILEY SONKA each had a hit.

St. Edward's drops to 1-4 and will travel to Colorado to play Colorado Christian and MSU-Denver over the weekend.
