LAWTON, Okla. – St. Edward's baseball rallied over the final two innings to take the lead only to surrender a walk-off, two-RBI double in the ninth to fall 6-5 to the Cameron Aggies in the first game of a four-game series.
After two scoreless innings, Cameron's Lance Barnett put the Aggies on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a two-out solo blast off St. Edward's starter
JACK GRANACK for the 1-0 lead before Granack struck out Spencer Simpson to end the inning.
An error and a passed ball scored another run for Cameron in the fourth, and Barnett hit his second home run in the fifth to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead. Granack lasted through the sixth inning and was replaced by
LUKE NEGRETE in the seventh after surrendering a leadoff single to Barnett, with Negrete striking out the next three.
After leaving seven runners stranded through seven innings, St. Edward's took advantage of a leadoff walk and error in the eighth to break through with a
DILLON FLORES two-RBI double, scoring
DAVIS DREWEK and
CARLO FIGUEROA.
TY MURRAY grounded out to second, moving Flores to third, and
CONNOR COX tied the game with an RBI single.
Colby Flood put Cameron back on top in the bottom of the inning, driving in Kody Bigford, who opened the inning with a leadoff single. Figueroa put St. Edward's up in the ninth with a two-run blast, scoring
TREVOR SEBEK, who opened the inning with a walk.
Negrete induced a groundout to open the bottom of the ninth but surrendered a single and a walk before being replaced by
AUSTIN ESSEX. Essex struck Kai Hershberg out looking for the second out, but Bigford hit a two-RBI double to end the game.
Flores and Cox had two hits each for St. Edward's, combining for three RBI. Sebek, Drewek, Figueroa, and
NICHOLAS ANDERSON also had a hit. Granack went six innings with seven hits and three runs allowed, with two earned. He struck out five and walked four. Negrete went 2.1 innings with three runs allowed, three strikeouts, and a walk. Essex was credited with the loss, surrendering just one hit with one strikeout.
St. Edward's drops to 6-9 with a 6-7 conference record. The Hilltoppers will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader.
