LAREDO, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team wrapped up its road trip with a victory over Texas A&M International, plating three runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 4-3 win.
The Hilltoppers fell into an early hole when Victoria Gonzalez hit a two-out, two-run blast in the bottom of the first inning to put Texas A&M International ahead.
LAUREN HOYT answered back in the top of the next inning. After two weeks of solid contact at the plate, sending shots near warning tracks, Hoyt broke through with a solo home run in the second.
St. Edward's took the lead with three runs in the fifth.
MEGAN MORRIS hit a one-out single to right field, then stole second, setting up
AUDRI CASTILLO's RBI double to right field.
HANNAH BOETTCHER followed with a single to left, putting runners on the corners for
JERZIE PELHAM's sacrifice fly.
ARIANNA VIDALES capped off the scoring run with an RBI triple.
A. Garcia led off with a double in the bottom of the fifth and later scored on E. Garcia's groundout to second, bringing the Dustdevils within one before Kennedy Griego flied out to end the inning. Garcia led off the seventh with another double, and Alanis drew a walk, but St. Edward's was able to retire the next three hitters to end the game.
KYLEN PADGETT went all seven innings with four strikeouts, eight hits, and three runs surrendered. Vidales,
KATIE DILLON, Hoyt, Morris, Castillo, and Boettcher each had a hit.
St. Edward's improves to 8-20 with a 6-12 conference record. The Hilltoppers will return home to host Lubbock Christian with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
