HOUSTON—St. Edward's women's track and field team performed strongly over the weekend, winning first-place finishes in the 800, mile, and 4x400 relays at the Texas Southern University Relays.
First-year
SARAH WILLSON led the field in the 800, clocking a 2:17.56 for first place. St. Edward's showcased its depth in the event, with six of the top 10 finishes and 13 of the top 20.
DELANEY LONG trailed Willson in third place at 2:19.69, followed by
JULIANA MERLO in fourth at 2:21.43 and
MIA RIVERA in fifth at 2:22.18.
TORI PONCE (2:28.43) and
ELLIE HOVRE (2:29.19) rounded out the top 10 in eighth and tenth, respectively.
BRYN PETERS (13th, 2:32.67),
JENNA SAUNDERS (14th, 2:34.18),
MIA SANCHEZ (16th, 2:35.21),
MIRYAM MENDOZA (17th, 2:35.71),
VICTORIA HINOJOSA (18th, 2:35.74),
MAGGIE RITTMEYER (19th, 2:39.25), and
MYLA CASTILLO (20th, 2:43.09) also competed.
Hovre paced 11 Hilltoppers in the mile. The senior finished in 5:28.48 to win the event as the Hilltoppers took the top eight spots.
SYDNEY SMITH (second, 5:30.60), Saunders (third, 5:31.20), Peters (fourth, 5:32.03), Sanchez (fifth, 5:33.35),
JORDAN SANDERS (sixth, 5:35.01),
SAMMY SALAZAR (seventh, 5:36.35), and Castillo (eighth, 5:38.52) rounded out the Hilltoppers in the top 10. Rittmeyer (11th, 5:54.91),
TAYLOR LATZA (13th, 6:02.78), and
MEGAN FERRELL (15th, 6:25.19) were the final three Hilltoppers.
In sprints,
JASMINE COOKE (13.32) earned a 19th-place finish in the 100 meters, and
HAILEY RODRIGUEZ placed 12th in the 200 meters (26.96).
AUDREY WISTAIN (15th, 27.03),
YAMILA CARTWRIGHT (16th, 27.04), and
AMARI SINGLETON (25th, 27.90) also competed in the 200.
Rodriguez also took home a third-place finish in the 400, running a sub-minute time of 59.65. Singleton placed fifth at 1:01.40, and Cooke 11th at 1:04.98. Wistain also competed in the 100 hurdles, finishing ninth at 16.49.
St. Edward's 4x400 relay teams took three of the top four spots. Singleton, Rodriguez, Rivera, and Willson won the event with a time of 4:02.62. Ponce, Hinojosa, Long, and Merlo finished third at 4:12.91, and Cooke, Smith, Latza, and Sanders were fourth at 4:32.68.
MICHAELA FALLON competed in the discus with a mark of 32.39 meters, placing eighth.
The Hilltoppers will compete in the Charles Austin Classic next weekend, hosted by Texas State in San Marcos.
