Rivera and Relay Teams Score Points for Women's Track at the LSC Championships

| By:
Portales, N.M. – MIA RIVERA led St. Edward's women's track and field in the distance runs, and the relay teams put together a solid final day of the Lone Star Conference Championships to score the Hilltoppers points.

"We gave everything we had this weekend. We didn't get the results we were hoping for, but the ladies battled hard," St. Edward's Head Track & Field Coach Steven Cary says. "There were exciting times and frustrating moments that were all part of the experience and memories we made together."

Rivera pulled double duty in the 1,500 and 5K, making waves in the latter with a seventh-place finish to score two points with a time of 18:04.71.

"Mia put everything into the 5K on Saturday night after a disappointing preliminary in the 1,500. The plan was to make it an honest aim for a 5:35 pace, and she did that through six laps," Cary says. "She was all alone leading that entire time, but it's what gave her the best shot at scoring. Once the pack caught her, Mia did a great job continuing to battle. She's one of the most resilient people I know, and I'm extremely proud of how she fought back to finish seventh."

CAROLINE WILDRICK put even more distance on her legs, running the 10K and 5K, clocking a 39:12.28 and 18:58.61, just missing the cut-off for scoring points.

"Caroline ran one of the best races I've seen her run in the 10K on Thursday night. She showed so much poise, ran in the chase pack for most of the race, then went for it and put herself into scoring position when things started to string out," Cary says. "She battled tooth and nail with the young lady from Tyler. I've never seen Caroline kick so hard, and we came up just shy of the top eight. It was a memorable race to watch, and I'm proud of how far she's come this season."

The quartet of KARLY WEYAND, Jasmine Cook, AUDREY WISTAIN, and YAMILA CARTWRIGHT clocked a 47.89 in the 4x100, placing sixth and scoring three points with a new school record. Weyand, HAILEY RODRIGUEZ, SARAH WILLSON, and Cartwright placed seventh to score two with a time of 3:55.87.

"Usually our relay teams do well at conference, and this year was no exception," Cary says. "Didn't quite finish as high as we'd hoped, but came away with a record in one and almost broke the record in the other. I thought it was a great effort displayed by all."
