Softball Shows Resilience, Rallies to Defeat Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – St. Edward's softball showcased its resilience, getting a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to complete a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the Cameron Aggies to close the series.

Cameron struck first, taking advantage of two walks to open the bottom of the first inning, setting up Tinley Schmidgal's RBI single. With runners on the corners, the Aggies executed a double steal for a second run before pitcher KYLEN PADGETT and the defense got out of the inning.

The Aggies doubled their lead in the second, manufacturing a run after Padgett hit Kelsye Loughman to start the inning. Makena Riggs moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, and Taylor Rowley did the same with a single. St. Edward's surrendered another run on a steal situation with runners in the corners when the throw from the plate to second went astray, plating the unearned run.

Alyssa Deanda followed with a single, setting up another runners on the corners situation, scoring on another error on the steal attempt.

Padgett walked back-to-back hitters in the third, prompting St. Edward's to call on LISETTE URQUIDEZ from the bullpen to get out of the inning.

ELLA HUTZLER sparked St. Edward's with a leadoff single in the fourth, and Cameron ignited the rally by following it with an error, allowing SLOANE HILL to reach. MEGAN MORRIS drove in the Hilltoppers' first run with an RBI single through the left side, and then RYAN RANGEL added two more with a frozen rope down the left-field line to pull St. Edward's within one at 4-3.

Cameron got one of those runs back with back-to-back doubles from Kaiden Boren and Schmidgal to open the fifth. The Aggies put two on to start the bottom of the sixth, but St. Edward's fought back with three consecutive outs, including a big strikeout by Urquidez.

Jocelyn Bright replaced Schmidgal in the pitcher's circle to start the fifth inning. She retired the first six Hilltoppers in order until surrendering a leadoff walk in the seventh. Stormee Reed came out of the bullpen for the save opportunity, and St. Edward's squandered the walk when pinch-runner Makena Holloway was picked off at first by Boren behind the plate.

However, JERZIE PELHAM recaptured the momentum with a double. ALEA DESERRANO moved her to third with a flyout to right field, but the Hilltoppers were down to their last out.

After Reed hit KATIE DILLON, Cameron's pitcher twice got St. Edward's to its last strike only to get clutch hits from the Hilltoppers.

ARIANNA VIDALES drove in Pelham with a slow rolling grounder between third and short, displaying her speed by beating the throw by two whole steps. Hutzler followed by quickly falling into a 0-2 hole, then drove the ball into deep right-center for the go-ahead two-RBI double.

The Hilltopper defense made quick work of Cameron in the seventh, retiring the side in order to preserve the win. Padgett went 4.2 innings in the win, striking out two with one walk, four hits, and one earned run allowed. Vidales and Hutzler each hit 2-for-4 with a run scored. Vidales had one RBI and Hutzler had two.

St. Edward's improves to 10-24 with an 8-16 conference record. The Hilltoppers will host Angelo State for a three-game series that kicks off on Thursday with a Friday doubleheader.
