AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's produced a big first inning, followed by steady run production throughout the game, and a solid performance from starting pitcher
JAKUB RAYFIELD to bounce back with a 10-2 win over Texas Permian Basin in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
St. Edward's set the tone with two diving catches in a three-up, three-down top of the first inning, getting diving catches from third baseman
TREVOR SEBEK and first baseman
CARLO FIGUEROA.
Texas Permian Basin poured gasoline on the fire when starting pitcher Isaias Espiritus hit Sebek and walked Figueroa to open the bottom of the inning.
CONNOR COX drove both in with an opposite-field double down the left-field line, forcing the Falcons to go to the bullpen three hitters in.
Kevin Plach entered the game and induced a groundout from
TY MURRAY, who twice tried to move Cox to third with a sacrifice bunt and then accomplished the task with a grounder to second. Plach hit
DIEGO SOLIS, then surrendered an RBI single through the left side to
KYLER KERLIN.
DAVIS DREWEK drove both in with an RBI triple he pulled down the right-field line, and
MAYSON WINTERS drove in Drewek with a sacrifice fly in his first appearance at the plate for St. Edward's to cap off the six-run first inning.
St. Edward's added another run in the second. Figueroa and Cox reached with one out on a walk and a single, then advanced on a balk, setting up an RBI from Murray on another groundout to the right side.
Texas Permian Basin scored a run in the third inning, opening with a Matthews single through the left side, then a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch to move him to second and third. Jack Haggerty followed with an RBI single through the left side.
Figueroa answered that run in the fourth, ripping a pitch to left-center for a double, then stealing third and scoring on a throwing error from the catcher. Victor Perez pinch-hit for Carson Johnson in the fifth and came through with a single through the left side. After Haggerty flied out to right field, Perez stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error from the plate to set up Mason Hamlin's RBI single through the right side.
St. Edward's loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth and got a sacrifice fly RBI from Cox and an RBI single to right field from Murray to go up 10-2.
Rayfield surrendered a leadoff infield single but bounced back to retire the next three to end the day with a complete-game win. He struck out three with a walk, and six hits surrendered for two runs allowed with one earned.
Cox led St. Edward's with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, driving in three runs and scoring once. Murray and Drewek each had a hit and two RBIs. St. Edward's improves to 9-12 with a 9-10 conference record. The four-game series concludes tomorrow at noon.
