Currie Dominates, Softball Sweeps Doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas – CADIE BELLE CURRIE made her first start at the Hilltop since mid-February, and St. Edward's softball provided enough run support to sweep the day's doubleheader with a 6-2 victory over Texas Permian Basin.

Currie showed some rust early, surrendering a walk and two singles to open the game. Texas Permian Basin scored one run on Stephanie Jimenez's single up the middle and another on Kelsey Valo's groundout to shortstop for the early 2-0 Texas Permian Basin lead.

St. Edward's senior pitcher rounded into form immediately after, striking out Melayna Lopez and Cheyenne Marquez back-to-back to end the inning.

The Hilltoppers responded immediately with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After KATIE DILLON grounded out, ARIANNA VIDALES snuck a single down the left-field line. Vidales kept the pressure on, stealing second and third while ELLA HUTZLER drew a walk, then stole second to put two in scoring position.

MEGAN MORRIS tied the game with a two-RBI single in the gap between right and center, and LAUREN HOYT followed with an RBI triple to give the Hilltoppers the lead.

Currie dominated after that, throwing three-up, three-down innings in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, while the Hilltoppers added three more runs in the fourth.

Jerzey Pelham sparked St. Edward's in the fourth with a leadoff double to left-center, and Dillon moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Vidales drew a walk, and the Hilltoppers executed a double steal to score another run. ELLA HUTZLER drove in Vidales with a sacrifice bunt attempt, reaching first on the fielder's choice after Texas Permian Basin failed to make the play at the plate. After SLOANE HILL flied out to right, moving Hutzler to third, the latter scored on a wild pitch.

Currie threw a complete game, limiting Texas Permian Basin to two runs on five hits while striking out eight with only one walk. Morris and Pelham each hit 2-for-3, with Morris driving in two runs and scoring one and Pelham scoring once.

St. Edward's improves to 13-32 with an 11-24 conference record. The Hilltoppers will play Texas Permian Basin tomorrow at noon with a chance to sweep the series.
