Softball Sweeps Texas Permian Basin

| By:
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – MEGAN MORRIS drove in three runs, the Hilltopper defense turned three double plays, and St. Edward's softball defeated Texas Permian Basin 5-1 to sweep the three-game series.

LISETTE URQUIDEZ started the game in the pitcher's circle and pitched a solid, complete game performance. She limited the Falcons to a single run, surrendering just five hits with two strikeouts and two walks with plenty of support from the defense.

Texas Permian Basin put two on in the first, but St. Edward's halted any momentum with excellent work from Morris and LAUREN HOYT up the middle for the 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.

St. Edward's took the lead in the bottom of the innings with an RBI single from Morris hit into left field to score ARIANNA VIDALES and ELLA HUTZLER, who reached on a walk and a single.

Texas Permian Basin's first two hitters reached safely in the second, but LAUREN HOYT showcased her range at second base when Parker lined out to the bag. Hoyt made the grab, stepped on second, and nearly turned the triple play, with Marquez narrowly beating the throw back to first. Urquidez closed the inning by striking out Nia Brown.

After St. Edward's went down in order in the second, Texas Permian's Emily Andress drew a leadoff walk, and Sanford moved her over with the sacrifice bunt. Quintero grounded to Morris at shortstop, who looked Andress back to second, then made the throw to first for the first out, with Hutzler then throwing Andress out at third for the 6-3-5 double play.

Urquidez retired the next six hitters to take St. Edward's into the bottom of the fifth, clinging to the 1-0 lead. JERZIE PELHAM sparked St. Edward's with a leadoff single up the middle, then stole second. KATIE DILLON laid down a bunt for a single to put runners on the corners, then stole second base to put two on for Vidales.

Vidales's grounder to second was misplayed by Andress, driving in Pelham on the RBI, scoring Dillon, and giving Vidales second base on the error. After Hutzler grounded out to the pitcher's circle, moving Vidales to third, SLOANE HILL drew a walk to put runners on the corners. CHARLOTTE NUCCIO ran for Hill, stealing second, and Morris drove two runs in with an RBI single to right field for the 5-0 lead.

Sanford hit a one-out single to left in the sixth, and Jimenez drove her in with an RBI single to center field for Texas Permian Basin's lone run.

Texas Permian Basin got a one-out double from Marquez in the seventh. However, she was later out for runner's interference running to third on Parker's grounder to short, and Vidales made a beautiful diving catch in center field for the final out to secure the sweep.

Morris and Dillon each hit 2-for-3 to lead St. Edward's. Morris drove in three RBIs, and Dillon scored once.

St. Edward's had three hitters bat over .500 for the series, led by Pelham and Morris's 5-for-9 performances. Morris drove in five RBIs over the weekend, Vidales scored four runs, and the Hilltoppers stole 20 bases in 20 attempts, with Vidales and Pelham combining for 10.

The Hilltoppers improved to 14-32 with a 12-24 conference record. St. Edward's will host Midwestern State next weekend with a doubleheader on Friday and a senior day game on Saturday.
