AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's softball continued its late-season momentum, sweeping Friday's doubleheader against Midwestern State to pick up its fifth consecutive victory.
Game 1: St. Edward's 8, Midwestern State 7
St. Edward's built a big lead early with excellent production from the top and bottom of its lineup and held on late with
CADIE BELLE CURRIE closing in the pitcher's circle for the 8-7 Game 1 victory.
Midwestern State loaded the bases in the top of the first with two singles and an error, scoring the game's first run on Megan Ayala's sacrifice fly.
St. Edward's answered immediately, opening the bottom of the first with a walk and back-to-back singles from
ARIANNA VIDALES and
ELLA HUTZLER. The latter scored
KATIE DILLON on an RBI single to center field.
SLOANE HILL put the Hilltoppers ahead with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Hilltopper defense retired the side in order in the second, and St. Edward's tacked on four more runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning.
LAUREN HOYT drew a leadoff walk,
AUDRI CASTILLO followed a strikeout with an infield single, and
JERZIE PELHAM and Dillon hit back-to-back RBI doubles for the 4-1 lead.
Midwestern State turned to its bullpen, and Vidales greeted Shyanne Florence with an RBI infield single. Hutzler drove in another run with a squeeze bunt, Scoring Dillon again.
The Mustangs loaded the bases to start the third, scoring a run on a groundout and a Mikey Dominguez sacrifice fly to cut the Hilltopper lead in half at 6-3.
MEGAN MORRIS responded with a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, and Castillo drove her in with an RBI single.
Midwestern State's first three hitters reached safely in the fourth on a leadoff single, an error, and a two-RBI single from Kayla Bryant.
KYLEN PADGETT recovered to strike out Monroe and field an unassisted out on a grounder from Addison Lindemann but hit Camile Nunez and surrendered another single to load the bases. A Hilltopper error allowed two more runs to score, tying the game at 7.
Currie replaced Padgett in the pitcher's circle to start the fifth and retired six of the next seven hitters. Pelham hit a leadoff double in the sixth and advanced to third on Dillon's groundout, setting up Vidales's sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.
Currie hit Dominguez to put the tying run on in the seventh but proceeded to strike out Bryant, Paige Gallegos, and Brianna Dominguez to pick up the win.
Game 2: St. Edward's 5, Midwestern State 1
LISETTE URQUIDEZ continued her late-season stretch of solid appearances in the pitcher's circle, and St. Edwards scored four runs in the sixth to run away with a 5-1 victory.
Urquidez and the Hilltopper defense opened the game with two quick outs. Still, Midwestern State responded with three consecutive singles, scoring on Ayala's RBI single to right-center for the 1-0 lead.
Morris hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the second, advanced to third on Hoyt's sac bunt, and
RYAN RANGEL drove her in on an RBI infield single.
Urquidez retired the side in order in the third and sixth innings, striking out Dominguez and Lindemann to end the latter.
Hill hit a leadoff single in the sixth, and
CHARLOTTE NUCCIO, pinch-running for Hill, stole second. However, the next two hitters went down swinging.
ALEA DESERRANO pinch-hit for Rangel and delivered an RBI single to right field to take the lead. After Castillo drew a walk, Pelham and Dillon reached on back-to-back errors, scoring two more runs, and Vidales capped off the scoring run with an RBI single.
Maegan Shannon hit a one-out double in the seventh, and Urquidez walked Avery Rohlman, but the Hilltopper defense recorded the next two outs to end the game.
Urquidez threw a complete game, striking out five with two walks, only six hits, and a run surrendered. Dillon and Vidales led St. Edward's with two hits and an RBI each.
St. Edward's improves to 16-32 with a 14-24 conference record. The two teams will finish the series tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. game on Senior Day.
