Baseball Wraps Up Season With Loss to LCU

LUBBOCK, Texas – St. Edward's baseball surrendered six runs in the first inning and left ten runners stranded in a 7-0 loss to Lubbock Christian to end the Hilltoppers' season.

Starting pitcher JAKUB RAYFIELD surrendered four singles to the first five hitters, with Shea Bowen executing a sacrifice bunt from the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Among those four singles, Jacob Gutierrez had an RBI infield single, Brevin McCool singled through the left side, and Ryan Ball had an RBI single to left-center, getting thrown out trying to stretch the hit an extra base.

Rayfield hit Jarred Gibson, walked Nate Van Maanen, and scored McCool on a wild pitch. An error scored two more runs, then Hayden Blair added a sixth on an RBI single to left-center.

St. Edward's turned to its bullpen in the middle of the fifth inning. Rayfield exited the game after 4.1 innings of work, surrendering three earned runs out of six with 10 hits surrendered, two strikeouts, and two walks.

AUSTIN ESSEX replaced Rayfield and went the rest of the way. In the sixth, Essex walked Carson Ogilvie to lead off the inning. Ogilvie stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the same play. After Essex struck out Bowen, Gutierrez drove in Ogilvie.
