AUSTIN, Texas – DARIA SCHLUMBOHM set a new St. Edward's women's soccer saves record,
ANNIE ROCHA scored her fourth goal in four games, and
BAILEY WILLIAMS filled in the rest of the gaps on the defensive backline for a 2-0 Hilltopper win over No. 14-ranked Colorado Mesa.
St. Edward's struck early, taking advantage of a foul in the box.
JISELL ZAVALETA DENOVA played the ball from the right sideline in front of the net, and Colorado Mesa keeper Keely Wieczorek knocked it down. However,
RILEY KNOX stepped in front of the clearance attempt and was tripped in the box, awarding the Hilltoppers a penalty kick in the first five minutes.
Rocha, whose first three goals were of the booming variety, used the one-on-one opportunity to showcase her placement, going low and to the right to find the back corner of the net for the early lead.
Colorado Mesa controlled possession over the next 20 minutes, generating three shots and four corner kicks. The Mavericks threatened more often than that, but Williams disrupted opportunities all over the field with perfectly executed slide tackles and challenges. Her stellar defensive play saved the Hilltoppers, turning potential one-on-one opportunities or corners into less threatening sideline throw-ins or even Hilltoppers' possession.
St. Edward's went to its bench nearly halfway through the first half, and fresh legs led to new opportunities. The Hilltoppers'
TRISTYN CABELLO came off the bench to test Wieczorek and generated two quick shots, and Rocha attempted another.
The Hilltoppers kept the pressure on and broke through again in the 38th minute when
MARIE HANNEDOUCHE sent a rocket to the top shelf, with Wieczorek making the leaping save only to have Isabell Ruiz follow the rebound with the easy score for the 2-0 lead at the half.
Colorado Mesa swarmed the pitch like a hive of angry bees in the second half, generating a 19-3 shot advantage after the break. As the match wore on, the Mavericks' shots became more accurate. Fortunately for St. Edward's, Schlumbohm was increasingly up to the task, making a series of spectacular saves to keep the shutout with a St. Edward's record 13 saves in a game, including 11 in the second half for the win.
St. Edward's improves to 2-2-1 after handing Colorado Mesa its first loss. On Wednesday, the Hilltoppers will travel to Tyler, Texas, to open conference play against the UT-Tyler.
