CONROE, Texas – St. Edward's softball split its opening days games, defeating Missouri Western State in the season opener and falling to (RV) Pittsburg State in the second game.
Game 1: St. Edward's 4, Missouri Western State 3
JERZIE PELHAM came off the bench to drive in the go-ahead run, and
MADDIE AGUILAR earned her first collegiate win out of the bullpen in a 4-3 St. Edward's victory.
MEGAN MORRIS reached on an error in the top of the fourth, and
SLOANE HILL capitalized with an RBI double to left field to give the Hilltoppers the lead.
KATIE DILLON sparked St. Edward's with a leadoff infield single in the sixth, advancing into scoring position with a stolen base. Hill drew a walk, and
JUNIPER DANIEL pinch-ran for her. After
AUDRI CASTILLO lined out to left field,
CIANA RODRIGUEZ came through with the clutch two-RBI double to give the Hilltoppers a 3-0 lead.
Missouri Western State took advantage of two St. Edward's errors in the sixth to tie the game. Mackenzie DeVine sparked her team with a leadoff double. Sydney Young pinch-hit for Kate Vosin and grounded out, moving DeVine to third. Myah Dwyer reached on an error, scoring DeVine.
Aguilar replaced
LISETTE URQUIDEZ in the pitcher's circle after the latter put in a solid 5.1 innings, striking out three, walking four, and surrendering just one hit and one earned run. Sienna Reed greeted Aguilar with a single. Ayva McComas popped up to second, and Morgan Byrd singled and advanced on an error, scoring two runs.
SOFIA APONTE hit a leadoff single in the top of the seventh and advanced two more bases on an error. Pelham pinch-hit for
LAUREN HOYT and drove Aponte in on a groundout for the go-ahead run.
Missouri Western State put two on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Aguilar came up with a clutch strikeout to end the game.
Game 2: (RV) Pittsburg State 8, St. Edward's 2
Pittsburg State scored five runs in the second and three in the fourth on its way to an 8-2 win over St. Edward's.
Lamont sparked Pittsburg State with a leadoff home run. The Gorillas then loaded the bases. Arnett hit an RBI infield single, Rushing hit a sacrifice fly, and Storey hit a two-RBI double.
Forbes led the fourth with a single up the middle, then stole second. Arnett followed with an RBI double, then Rushing hit an RBI single through the right side.
St. Edward's loaded the bases at the bottom of the fifth, and
MEGAN MORRIS hit a two-RBI single in the middle. Morris finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.
St. Edward's ends the first day with a 1-1 record. The Hilltoppers will play Regis and Southeastern Oklahoma State tomorrow.
