AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's women's basketball struggled offensively in the second and fourth quarters of a 55-42 loss to the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas.
J.P. led St. Edward's with 12 points, three assists, and three steals, hitting both 3-point attempts, but the Hilltoppers struggled from the field overall.
St. Edward's opened the game firing away from deep, hitting 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point line, including a steal and halfcourt shot from J.P. as time expired to give the Hilltoppers a 17-16 lead. J.P. hit both her 3-point attempts, and
AINSLEY THUNELL and
BAILEY FEATHERSTONE added another 3-pointer each.
The Hilltoppers went cold in the second quarter, shooting 1-for-12 from the field, and Texas A&M-Kingsville took advantage with an 11-0 run, going inside to Veyda Lake for five points on a layup and three made free throws. The Javelinas outscored the Hilltoppers 14-5 in the quarter to take a 30-22 lead into the half.
St. Edward's opened the second half with energy, pressing, and trapping, reeling off a 9-0 run with four different Hilltoppers scoring three points and
BAILEY FEATHERSTONE adding another field goal. Texas A&M-Kingsville countered with Janessa Payne scoring seven, maintaining a 36-43 lead heading into the fourth. The Hilltoppers maintained energy in the final quarter but remained cold from the field, shooting 3-for-12.
The Hilltoppers drop to 6-9 with a 2-4 conference record. St. Edward's will travel to play UT Tyler and Texas Woman's next week.
