AUSTIN, Texas – On Senior Day, the story wrote itself —
KARLEE FRIEBELE merely punctuated it with her first goal at the Hilltop, proving the difference in a 1-0 St. Edward's women's soccer victory over UT Permian Basin.
After working dutifully behind the scenes and at practices through her first two seasons at St. Edward's, Friebele broke through with her first appearances in her senior season, logging minutes in six games so far.
None was bigger than this first start, delivering a header into the back of the net in the 14th minute off a perfectly served corner kick from graduate student
MARIE HANNEDOUCHE.
Hannedouche set the tone early, putting a shot on goal in the first two minutes for the first of many taken against UTPB keeper Valeria Delgado — who put in a stellar performance with eight saves and several other diving stops to break up dangerous passes into the box.
St. Edward's created several premium opportunities, including a 1-on-1 break triggered by a perfectly placed pass over the top from Andrea Sanatana to
RILEY SISSON, deflected on a fingertip save off the top woodwork, then cleared out for a Hilltopper corner kick. Hannedouche played the ball into the box, and Friebele found space between two defenders for the header and goal.
The Hilltoppers kept the pressure on with a 9-3 shot advantage in the first half, but were limited to the lone score by Delgado.
Texas Permian Basin found some footing in the second half, working the right side between Cassandra Ramirez and Allyson Reed, but
LANE ROGERS and
MCKENNA KEELEY filtered out the most dangerous runs and
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM did the rest, recording three saves to preserve the Hilltoppers' second consecutive shutout victory.
St. Edward's improves to 4-6-2, including 3-3-2 in conference following two wins this week, getting two goals and an assist from Hannedouche. The Hilltoppers will host UT Dallas on Wednesday night under the lights at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
