LAREDO, Texas – After a scoreless first half, the St. Edward's men's soccer team found its rhythm late, striking twice in the final 15 minutes to secure a 2-0 win over Texas A&M International on Wednesday night at Dustdevil Field.
The Hilltoppers (5-4-3, 3-1-1 LSC) broke through in the 78th minute when midfielder
FILIP ADAMSKI buried his sixth goal of the season with a composed free kick from just outside the box. The scoring opportunity began when
MISAEL RANGEL intercepted a pass near midfield and
CHRISTIAN MEZAS quickly played the ball ahead to
ARMANDO DON JUAN, who drew the foul that led to the set piece.
St. Edward's continued to press and sealed the result in the 89th minute when Don Juan slotted home a pass from
ARTHUR SOUZA for his second goal of the year. The Hilltoppers again turned defense into attack, winning the ball in the Dustdevils' defensive third before Souza dropped back a perfect pass for the finish.
Goalkeeper
ANGEL RAMIREZ made two first-half saves to record his third shutout of the season, as the Hilltopper defense held the Dustdevils (2-5-5, 0-4-1) without a shot on goal after the break.
After going without a shot in the first half, St. Edward's flipped the momentum, outshooting TAMIU 7–0 and earning four corner kicks in the second half.
The victory pushes St. Edward's back above .500 as the Hilltoppers enjoy a weekend off before traveling to face Oklahoma Christian next Wednesday.
