DALLAS – St. Edward's opened aggressively against undefeated and top-ranked Dallas Baptist University, putting two shots on goal in the first 15 minutes, but surrendered the lone score in the 63rd minute of a 1-0 loss to the Patriots on Wednesday.
The Hilltoppers generated early pressure behind a set piece from
BAILEY WILLIAMS just past midfield, finding
MARIE HANNEDOUCHE for a clean look that was saved by DBU keeper Leslie Miller in the 10th minute. Less than two minutes later,
MCKENNA KEELEY placed a header on frame off another long service from Williams.
From there, Dallas Baptist controlled possession for much of the half, testing the Hilltopper defense with 12 first-half shots. St. Edward's held firm, with goalkeeper
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM recording four saves and the back line contributing two team saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
The Patriots continued to press in the second half, breaking through in the 63rd minute on a strike from Skyler Belanger from the left side, curling just beyond the reach of Schlumbohm into the far corner.
Schlumbohm finished with nine saves in a strong effort as DBU held a 26-4 advantage in shots.
St. Edward's moves to 5-8-2 overall and 4-5-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while DBU remains unbeaten at 13-0-0 (9-0-0 LSC). The Hilltoppers return home to host Lubbock Christian on Saturday at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
