BAYAMÓN, Puerto Rico — When packing for its trip to Puerto Rico, St. Edward's made sure to bring its lunch pails, turning in a blue-collar, gritty defensive performance in a 70-52 victory over Interamericana to sweep both games at the Puerto Rico Clásico.
JASMYN JACKSON led St. Edward's with 12 points in just 15 minutes, while
SUNI DAVIS added 10 points and six rebounds in a balanced offensive effort powered by a relentless defensive foundation.
St. Edward's controlled the paint from the opening tip, scoring 16 of its 19 first-quarter points inside.
MIKAH CHAPMAN added three points at the free-throw line as the Hilltoppers jumped out to a 19-6 lead. St. Edward's forced 10 Interamericana turnovers and collected eight offensive rebounds, building a 20-9 advantage in shot attempts while allowing just two made field goals in the quarter.
Britany Torres steadied Interamericana in the second quarter, scoring seven of her team's 11 points with four free throws and a 3-pointer. Still, the Hilltopper bench outscored Interamericana's 15-7 in the period. A backcourt duo of
RILEY MOORE and
JASMINE FARMER combined for nine points as St. Edward's carried a 38-17 lead into halftime.
Davis led all scorers at the break with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting, while Jackson added six on three shots. St. Edward's outscored Interamericana 32-6 in the paint and held a 19-11 edge in bench points.
The Hilltoppers continued to generate extra possessions in the third quarter, forcing seven turnovers and grabbing six offensive rebounds. St. Edward's outscored Interamericana 18-12 in the frame, again owning an 18-10 shot advantage. Jackson scored six points, while Chapman and Bennett added four apiece.
Arianna Oyola sparked Interamericana in the fourth quarter with eight points and two assists as both teams emptied their benches for extended minutes down the stretch.
Chapman finished with nine points and six rebounds, Bennett scored eight on 4-of-6 shooting with four steals and two assists, and Moore chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
St. Edward's wraps up the fall semester with an 8-3 record. The Hilltoppers will return from Christmas break to resume conference play, hosting No. 3-ranked Lubbock Christian on Friday, Jan. 2, at 5:30 p.m.
