Women's Track Wraps Up Indoor Season at LSC Championships

| By:
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – St. Edward's women's track & field wrapped up its first indoor season at the Lone Star Conference Championships, qualifying for one final and setting several personal bests.

"I'm super proud of the effort we gave this weekend at our first indoor conference championships," Head Track & Field Coach Steven Cary says. "It's taken so much work to get here but I'm glad they get to experience this. To have an indoor season and more competitions, it's a huge blessing for our athletes."

AUDREY WISTAIN qualified for the 60 hurdles final with a preliminary time of 9.134 on Friday, edging West Texas A&M's Janae Kille (9.137) for the final spot, finishing eighth. Myosia Virgin followed a few places behind at 9.57, and Mary-Kate Havens rounded out the Hilltopper lineup in 17th at 13.87. JASMINE COOKE competed in the 60-dash preliminaries and placed 20th with a personal-best 7.98.

Wistain followed up with a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles final, clocking a 9.14.

"Our hurdlers did well. Audrey is back. She did a fantastic job and had her highest finish at a conference meet. I'm proud of her," Cary says. "Jordan had a big weekend as well. She presented her research at a convention in Waco on Thursday, then flew to Albuquerque on Friday and achieved her best conference finish that night. That's the epitome of a student-athlete. I'm proud of her and Victoria for battling hard at this altitude in the 5K."

JORDAN SANDERS placed 10th in the 5K, clocking a 19:17.22. VICTORIA HOYT followed in 18th at 20:20.42. The Hilltopper team of DELANEY LONG, HAILEY RODRIGUEZ, JULIANA MERLO, and MIA RIVERA scored a fifth-place finish in the distance medley relay, running a combined 12:24.23.

On the second day of competition, DELANEY LONG ran a 5:14.89 mile to place 11th, and JULIANA MERLO followed a few seconds later in 13th at 5:32.02. MIA RIVERA finished 15th in the 3K, crossing the finish line at 10:46.81.

St. Edward's KARLY WEYAND, Rodriguez, Long, and YAMILA CARTWRIGHT placed ninth in the 4x400 relay at 3:57.35.

"I'm so proud of our relay teams. The DMR was tough and we weren't 100 percent healthy, but they fought hard. They put themselves out there and it didn't work out, but I love they weren't afraid to go for a big performance," Cary says. "Our women's 4x400 relay also ran well. They each set the tone and kept us in position to improve on our marks this season.

"We had lots of personal or season bests, which is always a positive. Again, I'm proud of the effort we gave and a job well done."

St. Edward's will immediately turn its attention to the outdoor track & field season, opening March 1 in Georgetown, Texas, with the Southwestern Opener.
