Morris Hits Two Home Runs, Softball Sweeps WNMU

AUSTIN, Texas – MEGAN MORRIS hit two home runs and drove in four RBI for a second consecutive game to lead St. Edward's softball to a 10-1 win over Western New Mexico in five innings. 
 
Morris put St. Edward's on the board in the bottom of the first with a three-run blast to left field, scoring KATIE DILLON and SOFIA APONTE, who reached on infield singles. St. Edward's senior shortstop followed with a leadoff home run in the third to the same spot. LAUREN HOYT added a second run in the inning with a sac fly to put St. Edward's up 5-0. 
 
St. Edward's starting pitcher, LISETTE URQUIDEZ, retired the first 11 hitters in a row before Abbi Markus hit a solo home run in the fourth. 
 
The Hilltoppers responded immediately with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning. KATIE DILLON hit a leadoff single through the right side, and then Aponte moved her over with a groundout to third. 
 
Morris reached on a fielder's choice when Dillon, the ball, and shortstop Toni Lucero converged at the same time and place. Dillon avoided Morris's grounder and ran through Lucero's tag, knocking the ball loose to put runners on first and third. 
 
Dillon scored on the throw from the plate to second on Morris's steal, then ELLA HUTZLER hit a single to shallow center field to put runners on the corners again. SLOANE HILL plated another run with an RBI single to the same spot. After JERZIE PELHAM fouled out, AUDRI CASTILLO hit an RBI single through the left side, and Hoyt hit a two-RBI double to deep left-center for the 10-1 lead.
 
Urquidez surrendered a leadoff single through the left side in the bottom of the inning but retired the next three to pick up her third win. Urquidez retired 15 of the 17 batters, surrendering only two hits, one run with no walks, and two strikeouts. 
 
Morris hit 2-for-3 with two home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored. Dillon, Hutzler, Hill, and Castillo all had two hits. Hoyt drove in three RBI. Morris hit 4-for-6 with eight RBI and five runs scored in the two games. Hill was a perfect 5-for-5 with four RBI and a walk. 
 
St. Edward's improves to 9-7 with a 3-3 conference record with the win. The Hilltoppers will host Eastern New Mexico for a doubleheader starting at noon.
