Walks, Defensive Breakdowns Cost Softball in Game 1 Against ENMU

AUSTIN, Texas – A two-out, three-run home run broke up a pitcher's duel between St. Edward's softball and Eastern New Mexico, but it was the defensive breakdowns in the fifth, which led to three crucial runs for the Greyhounds, that cost the Hilltoppers in a 6-3 loss.

HALEY CARMONA (L, 1-3) persevered through early deep counts to strike out six Greyhounds in four innings. St. Edward's starter struggled with control problems, walking five and surrendering four runs on four hits.

Both teams recorded a hit in each of the first two innings. St. Edward's starting pitcher, HALEY CARMONA, allowed a single and a walk in the first but struck out the side to emerge unscathed.

KATIE DILLON hit a leadoff infield single in the bottom of the inning and moved to second on SOFIA APONTE's sacrifice bunt but was left stranded in scoring position.

Eastern New Mexico broke through in the top of the third inning with a three-run, two-out home run off the bat of shortstop Emily Marsh before Carmona caught Miranda Guillen looking to end the inning.

The Greyhounds took advantage of an error and defensive miscues to add three runs on two hits in the fifth. Carmona walked Alondra Vasquez to open the inning. MAKENNA HOLLOWAY replaced Carmona in the circle and hit Alexa Ayala.

Grace Rofi executed a sacrifice bunt and was rewarded first on a throwing error, scoring a run. Marsh followed with an RBI single through the left side. Rashelle VerSteeg placed a grounder between first and the mound, leaving no one to cover the bag for the infield single. Holloway walked Madison Begaye to score a final run.

Eastern New Mexico starter Miranda Guillen walked the bases loaded with two outs at the bottom of the inning, and ELLA HUTZLER took advantage with a two-RBI single to center field. Hutzler added a sacrifice fly to left field in the seventh before SLOANE HILL grounded out to end the game.

Dillon, Morris, Hutzler, and Hoyt each had a hit. Hutzler drove in all three RBI, and Dillon scored two of the three runs. St. Edward's drops to 9-8 with a 3-4 conference record.
