Ella Hutzler Hits Walk-Off Home Run in the Bottom of the Ninth

AUSTIN, Texas – ELLA HUTZLER hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to deliver a 4-3 St. Edward's victory over the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds to split the doubleheader.

After driving in all three Hilltopper runs during the Game 1 loss, Hutzler was responsible for half of St. Edward's four runs in Game 2, concluding the game in extra innings with her third home run of the season.

St. Edward's had an opportunity in the first when KATIE DILLON drew a leadoff walk but was caught stealing, leaving St. Edward's scoreless despite SOFIA APONTE's stand-up triple to deep left center.

Eastern New Mexico struck first when St. Edward's starter, LISETTE URQUIDEZ, walked Emily Marsh. Then, Grace Rofii reached on an error, setting up Madison Begaye's RBI single into shallow centerfield for the unearned run.

Dillon redeemed himself in the second inning by tying the game with an RBI single to right field after AUDRI CASTILLO drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.

St. Edward's put two on with an error and a single in the fifth, and SLOANE HILL put the Hilltoppers ahead with an RBI double to left field. AUDRI CASTILLO added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring ELLA HUTZLER

Urquidez got into a jam in the sixth inning, loading the bases with two outs on two singles and a walk, but got Skylar Hardin to ground out to third to end the inning.

Eastern New Mexico opened the seventh inning with a leadoff single rocketed right back at Urquidez. St. Edward's starting pitcher was able to knock it down with her bare hand but couldn't make the throw at first. Valeria Contreras reached on a fielding error, and Eastern New Mexico made the Hilltoppers pay with a two-RBI triple from Christina Meneses off the right-field wall.

Urquidez surrendered a leadoff walk in the eighth, putting a runner in scoring position on Rofii's sacrifice bunt. However, Dillon robbed a run with a spectacular diving catch in right field, and Urquidez fielded a comebacker to the mound to end the inning.

Eastern New Mexico left fielder Meilana Lopez returned the favor in the bottom of the inning with a full sprint over-the-shoulder catch to prevent the walk-off run.

The Greyhounds loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth inning, but Urquidez and the Hilltopper defense kept their composure, recording consecutive fielder's choice outs at home and a pop-up to second to end the inning.

Hutzler put the game away by launching a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence to end the game.

Urquidez (W, 4-2) went all nine innings, striking out five and walking five, with only one earned run surrendered on six hits. Hutzler hit 2-for-5, bringing her batting average to a team-high .375 with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored.

St. Edward's improves to 10-8 with a 4-4 conference record after handing Eastern New Mexico only its second conference loss, dropping the Greyhounds to 13-5 with six conference wins. St. Edward's will hit the road to play at Sul Ross on Friday.
