Women's Basketball Closes Season With Loss To St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's women's basketball ended the season with a 60-57 loss to the St. Mary's Rattlers in a second consecutive game between the two teams to go down to the wire. 
 
Kianna Bennett hit four 3-pointers to lead St. Edward's with 18 points and eight rebounds, but St. Mary's got 18 free-throw attempts to just seven for the Hilltoppers, outscoring the Hilltoppers 15-3 from the charity stripe. 
 
St. Mary's opened the game on fire, shooting 8-for-13 from the field in the first quarter with a 9-0 scoring run down the stretch to take an 18-12 lead. 
 
Bennett hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter, opening the lanes enough for St. Edward's to outscore St. Mary's 12-6 in the paint. The Hilltoppers reeled off an 11-0 run late, capped off by back-to-back buckets inside from AINSLEY THUNELL, leading to a 35-29 lead at the half. 
 
Bennett was the lone player in double figures at the break, scoring 11 points on eight shots. Callens led St. Mary's with nine points on 4-for-6 shooting. 
 
Midway through the third quarter, St. Mary's closed the gap with a 7-0 run. Both teams exchanged the lead seven times, with St. Mary's getting to the free-throw line eight times, hitting seven, and taking a 50-46 lead. 
 
The Hilltoppers twice cut the lead to one in the fourth quarter. BAILEY FEATHERSTONE found Bennett for a 3-pointer with 4:37 remaining to pull within 54-53, and Featherstone made a driving layup a few minutes later to stay within 56-55 at the 2:47 mark. However, St. Mary's closed the game on a 4-2 run to ice it. 
 
Callens led St. Mary's with 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting, and Raynne Malik added an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, shooting 7-for-10 from the free-throw line. Imani Ivery contributed 10 points and seven assists. 
 
Thunell and Featherstone joined Bennett in double figures. Thunell scored 12 points on nine shots with five rebounds and two steals. Featherstone scored 11 points off the bench. St. Edward's closes its season with an 11-20 record, including 7-14 in conference play.
