AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's softball swept no. 18-ranked Oklahoma Christian with a pair of walk-off singles, taking a nine-inning stunner and a classic one-run pitching duel to snap the Eagles' four-game winning streak.
Game 1: St. Edward's 5, Oklahoma Christian 4
SLOANE HILL capped off a perfect game at the plate with a walk-off single in the ninth to deliver St. Edward's softball a 5-4 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
Hill led St. Edward's with a 4-for-4 performance, hitting a double, driving in two RBI, scoring a run, and drawing a walk.
St. Edward's struck first in the bottom of the second, sparked by back-to-back singles from Hill and
LAUREN HOYT to open the inning.
AVI MARTINEZ moved them over with a sacrifice bunt, reaching on an error that scored Hill.
Oklahoma Christian answered right back in their next at-bat. The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a hit batter. St. Edward's mitigated the damage with a double play when Victoria Brazil flied out to center field and Kadence Brewster left too early on the tag up.
Kate Paulsen didn't allow the Eagles to leave empty-handed with a two-RBI single up the middle to tie the game. Oklahoma Christian loaded the bases with only one out in the top of the fifth, but the Hilltopper defense held steady and escaped unscathed.
The Eagles manufactured a run in the top of the sixth when pinch-hitter Chenna Davidson came through with a leadoff single and advanced to third on a sac bunt and groundout to setup Marti Yaerger's RBI single through the right side.
Oklahoma Christian retired the next five Hilltoppers in order, taking St. Edward's down to its final out.
MEGAN MORRIS extended the Hilltopper hopes with a single to right-center, followed by an
ELLA HUTZLER walk. Hill tied the game with the first of two clutch RBI, ripping a single into left field.
Brewster hit a solo blast in the eighth, and
ARIANNA VIDALES and
KATIE DILLON responded with back-to-back hits in the bottom of the inning, tying the game on Dillon's RBI double through the left side.
LISETTE URQUIDEZ replaced
HALEY CARMONA to start the ninth and retired the Eagles in order. Hutzler hit one-out double to left-center, then Hill ended the game with an RBI single to the same spot.
Game 2: St. Edward's 1, Oklahoma Christian 0
KYLEN PADGETT and Jill Dickson went head-to-head in a classic defensive duel, taking shutouts into the final inning, and Vidales delivered the walk-off single in the seventh.
Padgett surrendered only three hits, all in different innings, with no walks or hit batters. St. Edward's junior pitcher retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth, and seventh innings.
Dickson carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before
MEGAN MORRIS broke it up with a two-out single through the left side.
Hill drew a leadoff walk at the bottom of the seventh, and head coach Hailey Post pinch-ran
JUNIPER DANIEL to put more speed on the base paths.
LAUREN HOYT moved Daniel over with a sacrifice bunt, and
AVI MARTINEZ put runners on the corners with a single through the left side.
After
CIANA RODRIGUEZ fouled out, Vidales drove the walk-off single into left field to end the game.
Hill finished the day 4-for-5 with three walks, two RBI, and a run scored. Vidales and Rodriguez each had two hits and an RBI for the day. St. Edward's improves to 15-13 with a 9-9 conference record after the wins. The Hilltoppers will host Cameron on Sunday.
